Academy Award winner Michael Douglas stars as the legendary entertainer Liberace who, for five years, lived in a secret relationship with his 22-year-old former chauffeur Scott Thorson (Matt Damon). The famed pianist denied being a homosexual throughout all his life.
Beyond the Candelabra was originally planned as a feature film by its director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic). Due to lack of funding (reportedly because of the prickly subject) the project went to HBO. It marks the last movie directed by the filmmaker (Side Effects being the last movie with a cinema release).
