The Mommy-Porn bestseller gets a movie adaptation!
Fifty Shades of Grey centers on shy college student Anastasia Steele’s passionate affair with enigmatic entrepreneur, Christian Grey, whose predilection for BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism) in the bedroom has titillated audiences across the globe.
Beginning as online fan fiction inspired by The Twilight Saga, author E.L. James followed the the first book with two sequels: Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Universal Studios snapped up the rights to the books, beating Sony Pictures’ $3 million bid. With the first book dubbed the fastest-selling novel of all time with more than 20 million copies worldwide, the studio bids were bound to be astronomically high. Specialty label Focus Features is set to market and distribute the film, being no strangers to scandalous adaptations, having previously produced Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution and Brokeback Mountain.
Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti have reportedly signed on to produce the saucy adaptation, having previously teamed up on Oscar-winning The Social Network. It has also been announced that Universal Pictures have found a screen writer for the project in Kelly Marcel (writer of celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks).
With the web abuzz with casting speculations, Fifty Shades of Grey is sure to debut a franchise as scintillatingly successful as its original novel.
Screenwriter Kelly Marcel promised: ’It will be NC-17. Its going to be raunchy. We are 100 per cent going there.’ We remain doubtful…
