Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy gets a fresh adaptation with young leads
Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth star as William Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. This new version of the often-filmed romance is set in old Verona as opposed to the fictional modern-day Verona Beach in the popular Baz Luhrmann version of the play. In the war between the two most powerful families of the city, the Montagues and Capulets, Romeo, the crown prince of the Montague clan, falls hopelessly in love with Juliet, Lord Capulet‘s daughter.
Romeo and Juliet was filmed numerous times. What makes this particular version special, is the pedigree of the screenwriter, Julian Fellowes. The Academy Award winner is the creator of Downton Abbey and wrote the acclaimed script for Robert Altman’s Gosford Park. It‘s also quite unusual that the principal cast is actually nearly as young as the characters they are playing: In the play, Juliet is a 13-year-old. Steinfeld was just sixteen when Romeo and Juliet started production.
