Mike Martingano (Tatum) leads a double existence: by day he is a construction worker, by night he is Magic Mike, a veteran male stripper, who works his female audience into fits of delight. And yet Mike wants out of it and saves money for another existence far away from screaming girls and his oily boss, the ex-stripper Dallas (McConaughey). When he meets The Kid (Pettyfer) and introduces him to his world, his decision to end his Magic Mike days is tested...especially as he gets to know The Kids sister Paige (Cody Horn).
Steven Soderbergh decided to direct Magic Mike after Channing Tatum, with whom he worked on Haywire, told him about his past as a stripper when he was a 19 year old in Tampa. The director stated that John Travoltas cult dance drama was the blue print for their sweaty collaboration. For this very personal story Soderbergh assembled quite a cast. Apart from Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Alex Pettyfer the film co-stars Olivia Munn and Adam Rodriguez. Magic Mike is Soderberghs third to last film before his announced retirement. Only the HBO drama Behind the Candelabra and the psychological thriller Side Effects will follow.
