The Captain returns, taking his fight against evil into the present day!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set in the present day, where Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) continues his affiliation with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.
The title The Winter Soldier hints at a comic storyline involving Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who was originally recruited by Steve Rogers to join his special forces team. Bucky seemingly fell to his death during the train ambush sequence in Captain America - The First Avenger. In the comic, he was turned into an assassin by Russians who erase his memory, give him a new bionic arm, and cryogenically freeze him between missions - enabling him to resurface in the present day. With a new villain that once fought side-by-side with Captain America, the story-line is also rumored to involve flashback elements from the World War 2 period.
Emily VanCamp (Revenge) is cast as the female lead, meaning that she probably is going to play Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13). Several up-and-coming actresses were rumoredly considered for the role including Anna Kendrick (), Felicity Jones (), Imogen Poots () and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Sharon is not only a member of S.H.I.E.L.D but also the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), who was Steve Rogers love interest in the first film. It's rumored that Peggy will appear in a flashback scene. In a surprising piece of casting news, legendary actor Robert Redford will play a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D., while on the villain side of things, Frank Grillo (The Grey, Warrior) is cast as Crossbones.
