Christian Bale and Natalie Portman star in a new Terrence Malick melodrama
Legendary filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands, The Thin Red Line, ) directs this romantic drama about a man (Christian Bale) seeking truth and love in the LA film industry. The title appears to refer to the Knight of Cups tarot card which represents a person who is nice, clever and principled, but also a dreamer, easily sidetracked and discouraged. If laid upright the card represents change, especially of a romantic nature. Laid downright, however, it suggests unreliability and recklessness.
Knight of Cups is being shot back-to-back and edited simultaneously with Malick's second current project Lawless (the title will soon change), which also stars Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett along with Ryan Gosling. 2013 is set to be a big year indeed for fans of the elusive director, who has released a mere six feature films in his 40-year film-making career.
