The year is 2159. For the few who can afford it, home is an idyllic space station called Elysium. The rest of mankind however, lives on the overpopulated, ruined Planet Earth. Naturally the poor, huddled masses yearn for nothing more than to live on Elysium. But anti-immigration laws are strict and enforced violently. When out-of-luck ex-con Max (Matt Damon) takes on a suicide mission, he may very well bring an end to this inequality. Jodie Foster () stars as Secretary Rhodes, one of the staunch defenders of strict anti-immigration laws.
Director Neill Blomkamp had a huge hit with his first film which was nominated for four Oscar gongs including Best Picture. The sci-fi film, whose political overtones were barely concealed, grossed over $10 million dollars in the box-office. The synopsis of Elysium suggests that such political metaphors will remain, but this time Neill Blomkamp has a much bigger budget to play around with (an estimated $130 million). leading man Sharlto Copley returns to support one of Hollywoods most capable leading men Matt Damon.
