Matthew McConaughey dropped 30 pounds in order to star in this AIDS drama directed by Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Valle (). The Magic Mike star plays Ron Woodroof, an American electrician who is diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. Given the lack of healthcare available to HIV patients at the time, he is told to simply 'go home and die.' Not one to give up, Dallas Buyer's Club follows the true story of Woodroof's fight for survival as he procures and distributes crucial HIV drugs by smuggling them from Mexico.

Jared Leto co-stars in The Dallas Buyer's Club. The actor plays a flamboyant cross-dresser who also has HIV. Gael Garca Bernal was rumored to have been circling the role but his casting never realized.
