With twelve nominations, Lincoln is the giant among Oscar contenders |
Steven Spielberg's Lincoln chronicles the last four months of the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, played by two-time Academy Award-winner Daniel Day-Lewis. Set at the close of the American civil war, the film follows Lincoln as he embarks on drafting a resolution to abolish slavery forever. Spielberg describes his film as portraying "a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition." The prestigious project boasts a spectacular cast: Sally Field plays Lincoln's wife Mary Todd Lincoln, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer) plays Robert Todd Lincoln. John Hawkes (Winters Bone) and James Spader (Boston Legal) play political operatives, while Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive) plays influential Congressman and staunch abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) and Bruce McGill (Heat, MacGyver) respectively play Secretary of State William Seward and Secretery of War Edwin Stanton, two important members of Lincolns cabinet. The screenplay, based on the Lincoln biography Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, is penned by Tony Award-winning playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America). Steven Spielberg's heartfelt ode to the 16th President of the United States won a Golden Globe for Daniel Day-Lewis astonishing central performance. Lincoln has received twelve Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director (Steven Spielberg), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Tommy Lee Jones), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Sally Field), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
