An adaptation of August Strindberg's play by the screen legend Liv Ullman
Liv Ullmann, the star of numerous Ingmar Bergmann classics, brings August Stringberg's play Miss Julie to the big screen. Set in 19th century, the play tackles themes of power, class and sex in a decidely Scandinavian (read: rather bleak) fashion. The titular heroine, played by Jessica Chastain, is a noble lady who falls for the particularly well-mannered senior servant Jean (Colin Farrell). Soon their blooming romance turns into a play of power, in which it never is clear who has the upper hand.
It must mightily piss off Liv Ullmann to always be described as 'Ingmar Bergmans muse'.
