The day someone green-lights a Marvel Zombies Ghibli film directed by Xavier Dolan is the day I will be happy. Any day now...

Like delicious pizza or something glued to your hand, you just can't put a good superhero down. Sure, crime fighters regularly lose their lives in their unique line of work, but as any comic book fan knows, death is far from permanent in the world of superheroes.

This fact should hopefully provide solace for those of you who were heartbroken to see Damien Darhk murder Laurel Lance towards the end of Arrow's fourth season. Fans have speculated for some time now that the Black Canary could return somehow for Season Five, despite Stephen Amell's protests to the contrary. Now, it looks like that speculation may have been right.

Pay your respects and watch Laurel's funeral from Season 4 of Arrow below:

Will Laurel Lance Return To Arrow?

We already knew that Laurel Lance's legacy would be honored by Oliver Queen, who erects a statue in memory of his fallen ally. But during a recent interview at Salt Lake Comic Con, actress Katie Cassidy revealed that her character will next appear in the Season 5 premiere of Arrow:

"Coming up, you will see me in the premiere of Arrow, Season 5. Pretty exciting. And I will also be—they announced at Comic Con, which I'm safe to say—across all three shows: Flash, Legends, and Arrow, for this next year. So, I'm excited about that."

This must have been great news for Cassidy, who also shared her feelings on Laurel's death and the journey her character took over the course of four seasons;

"I got an email from my producer and they're like, 'We want to have a meeting.' And I was like, 'Can you just tell me now?' I just had this gut feeling. You know, it's television and in this world, especially, anything can happen. And I think that's a positive thing, if you think about it. Because maybe, you know, bring them back. I don't know. So, yeah, it was definitely tough, but I appreciate the last four and a half years that they wrote for me. I had such a great arc. As a character and an actor, that is such an amazing character to play and journey to go on."

The real question is: How will Laurel Lance return from the dead for the Season 5 premiere of Arrow this fall?

Despite being a divisive character, Laurel Lance's fan base was strong enough to vote Black Canary in as DC's best TV hero earlier this year — so her death unsurprisingly caused a lot of controversy among the show's viewers.

There's a chance, then, that the writers of Arrow may simply regret their decision and have secretly decided to bring Laurel back to life. It's possible should could be resurrected either through use of the Lazarus Pit ,or perhaps even thanks to the time-travelling antics of Sara Lance, her sister from The Legends of Tomorrow.

However, this looks extremely unlikely for a number of reasons;

  • First, if the writers resurrect Laurel, it would be like admitting that they'd made a mistake to kill her off in the first place.
  • Second, it's been made pretty clear from the promotional material released so far that Laurel's legacy will play a large role in Season 5. Her return from the dead would completely negate that.

However, there could be a way to bring Laurel back from the dead that actually works within the internal logic of the Flarrowverse.

Will The Flash Bring Laurel Lance Back From The Dead?

In the Season 2 finale of The Flash, Barry Allen travelled back in time and rescued his mother — because clearly, the time stream hasn't been damaged enough by the CW heroes and their incessant meddling.

The team behind Arrow have argued that the Flashpoint event shouldn't have a significant impact on the show, but it's hard to imagine that Barry's actions wouldn't have at least some effect on Oliver and Star City. This line of reasoning has led some fans to wonder whether Laurel's death could be retconned thanks to the new reality that the Flash has created.

It's another unlikely proposition, but if the writers did decide to go down this route, the best way to resurrect Laurel would be by reintroducing her into Oliver's life as the Black Siren, an evil counterpart that previously showed up as a meta-human from Earth 2. Whether this fan-favorite version of Laurel is retconned into existence by Flashpoint or simply travels between worlds to take revenge on Barry's friends, the shock of seeing an evil version of their dead friend would certainly shake things up for Team Arrow.

However, the team behind Arrow have maintained that they want to take the show back to basics with a more grounded approach that veers away from the magical story lines of the past two seasons. If that's the case, then the Season 5 premiere may use a more natural approach to bring Laurel back.

Whether you love them or hate them, flashbacks have been an integral part of Arrow since day one, revealing exactly how Oliver survived being stranded on a desert island (slash half of the known world) for five years as he trained to become a kick ass vigilante.

Given that the title of the Season 5 premiere is 'Legacy' and that the show runners have already clung to flashbacks far longer than anyone expected them to, it's not hard to imagine that Laurel will appear in the memories of her former comrades as they reminisce on the impact that the Black Canary had on their lives.

With any luck, we'll also find out what Laurel whispered to Oliver on her death bed. Our money's on something along the lines of;

"What do you think Bill Murray whispers to Scarlett Johansson at the end of Lost In Translation?"

Right now, your guess is as good as ours, regarding both Laurel's and Murray's cheeky whispers. Whatever happens though, using flashbacks that honor Laurel's legacy would be a strong way to move Oliver's arc forward, signalling a new direction for Arrow that could truly hit the mark and return the show to its former glory.
