The #DCEU just got a little smaller, and those hoping for some whips and PVC in #BenAffleck's 2019 solo Batman film had better fulfill their fetish elsewhere. It appears that fan-favorite/love interest Selina Kyle will not be appearing in the hotly anticipated film, tentatively titled #TheBatman.
Erik Davis from Fandango broke the news, which weirdly comes from Sienna Miller, of all people.
Miller has been working with Affleck on his upcoming mob outing Live By Night, where the Dark Knight himself revealed that Kyle's #Catwoman won't be joining Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke in the Bruce Wayne close-up. We already know that The Batman will be villain heavy, but Catwoman is yet another antihero that joins Jason Todd on the villain scrapheap. Todd's Robin suit was a perfectly placed Easter Egg in #BatmanvSuperman, and his death may have been referenced in #SuicideSquad, but the rise of the Red Hood won't be visited in Affleck's solo. Perhaps a focus on lesser known villains, and not overstocking Batfleck's film with enemies will prevent that dreaded Spider-Man 3 syndrome.

With Catwoman out of The Batman, it doesn't necessarily mean that the character isn't somewhere sharpening her claws. Selina Kyle is sure to turn up somewhere in the Affleckverse, and a post-credit scene in The Batman is one way to keep the fanboys happy. A more subtle way to introduce the character could be to follow suit from The Dark Knight, where Morgan Freeman alluded to Catwoman's arrival in The Dark Knight Rises with the “should do fine against cats" line. Either way, don't have your Catwoman theories neutered just yet.
Otherwise, Kyle could be getting ready for the Harley Quinn solo movie. Margot Robbie will once again be slipping on her hot pants, and with a female-first film promised, the likes of Poison Ivy and Catwoman could stop by for a cup of mayhem. The trio have a complicated history, and even a short-lived web series Gotham Girls. Apart from Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman it has so far been a show for the boys. Jena Malone's part (as possibly Batgirl) was cut from Batman v Superman, and there is no news on whether she will be entering the Batcave next time around. In the meantime, it looks like Bruce Wayne's adventures will remain a masculine tale of testosterone and testicles, and there is no clear female lead in the cards yet.
The Leading Lady?
It looks like she won't get a crack at the whip anytime soon, but Miller went on to offer her services should the part of Catwoman become available — personally, she wouldn't be my first choice. That isn't to say that cupid won't be firing his arrows Bruce's way though. Should we go back to the start for The Batman and one of Bruce's earliest conquests? If we are sticking with Affleck's aged Bruce, then an older Vicki Vale ties together films and #comic as an entry level love interest. Kim Basinger portrayed Vicki Vale in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, while a more established version of the character had brief appearances in Rocksteady's Arkham games.
As for Catwoman, is the specter of Halle Berry's maligned Catwoman solo still looming over DC, or are we just a bit saturated with the character? Rarely is Batman without his feline partner in crime, and as an important part of the DCEU, it is only fair that Affleck gets her right. Cinema-goers will automatically refer back to Michelle Pfeiffer's incarnation of the cat in 1992's Batman Returns, with Pfeiffer undoubtedly being the ultimate Selina Kyle. Balancing her downtrodden human persona and her psychotic Catwoman side, this Selina didn't appear until the second film. Then we had Anne Hathaway's hyper-realistic portrayal of the slinky cat burglar, and even that took Christopher Nolan three whole films to introduce her.
Just as long as Affleck doesn't go full Nolan and we have to wait until the third film, I am happy to hold off on the sexy Selina. A simple Easter Egg, a la The Joker in Batman Begins will tide me over for now. Someone get her a saucer of milk, your time will come, Selina!
