A wedding day is supposed to be all about the happy couple celebrating their love with the world. What happens, however, when one of the biggest names in Hollywood crashes the festivities? As couple Elisabeth and Ryan learned this weekend, it means a great photo op and a fun memory to add to the special day.
Tom Hanks proved once again to be America's fun uncle as he crashed the unsuspecting couple's wedding photos in New York City. Photographer Meg Miller was there to capture the moment that might otherwise be considered too cool to believe. After delighting the couple and their friends Hanks was sure to snap a quick selfie and share it to Instagram.
Earlier today, Elisabeth and Ryan posted the video of their lovely celebrity encounter, which made me love Hanks even more — if that's actually possible. Just look at how happy he made them!
If pausing his jog for some photos wasn't enough, he also offered his services as an ordained minister for their wedding in case their current one falls through on the big day. Check out footage the Oscar-winning wedding crasher below.
With the rise of social media and a camera in everyone's pockets, unbelievable celebrity surprises like this finally come with the photo evidence to back them up. And Tom Hanks is far from the first celeb to crash a wedding. I'm not just talking about the movie Wedding Crashers.
Here are eight other famous celebrity wedding crashers who took a page out of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn's book.
1. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift's surprise visits to with her fans are plentiful and well-documented. But she outdid herself once again by not only showing up to longtime fan Max Singer's wedding to Kenya Smith, but she also performed a stripped-down version of "Blank Space" during the reception.
And being the Pintrest-enviable craftswoman that she is, she also gave the newlyweds a handmade watercolor card. What a gem!
2. Justin Timberlake
Just last month, Justin Timberlake was wrangled by the father of this New Hampshire bride to pop in for a fun wedding photo with the bride and groom.
While Chelsey Gaudet and Ryan Parks were in the middle of their wedding photography, Dennis Gaudet spotted Timberlake milling about the venue and asked him to surprise his daughter. The "Can't Stop The Feeling" singer happily obliged. Now if only they could have convinced him to join them on the dance floor.
3. Maroon 5
One of the biggest large-scale wedding crashes was put together by Maroon 5 for their song "Sugar." Over the course of one three-day weekend, the band actually gave surprise performance at actual weddings in Los Angeles.
In this case, it was the grooms who orchestrated the big event to shock their brides and wedding guests the day of. While talking to ET, a Maroon 5 representative outlined a bit of how the events went down.
"Only the grooms knew in each case. However they disclosed it to their bride and the wedding party, we're not sure, but they all wanted it to be as equally a surprise as we did. They had stages set up for their actual wedding band already. All we did was some simple continuity changes to match each one as best we could."
Not only did these couples get an awesome wedding band, they also have footage of their day memorialized in an actual music video.
I imagine most brides wouldn't want to be upstaged on their special day, but I'd be more than willing to make an exception if Beyoncé wants to crash my wedding.
While vacationing with her family in 2014, the hip hop power couple visited a local church in Portofino, Italy, unwittingly crashing the wedding of a fan. The blushing bride looked gorgeous in her lace dress and was somehow able to maintain some semblance of cool while standing beside Queen Bey. Talk about a big day!
5. Bill Murray
To be fair, this isn't technically a wedding, but Bill Murray is so notoriously hard to pin down that I'm still going to say it counts.
Stories of Bill Murray's random appliances at fan events, bars and house parties have long been the stuff of legends — but there's no denying this video footage of him giving a speech at a bachelor party. With as much life experience as Murray has under his belt, I trust the sage advice he doles out to the young groom and his friends.

6. Snoop Doog
After saying their vows at the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago, the photographer for newlyweds Neesha Ghadiali and and Joe Scheller spotted Snoop Dogg in the lobby. Upon hearing Scheller's mother point out that the couple is a big fan of the rapper, the photographer sprung into action.
In an interview with NY Daily News, president of Allusion Photography, Sherry Hagerman, said that Snoop hung around for a bit and shared some laughs with the happy couple.
“They had a great conversation and a ton of laughs inside the bar. Snoop was a blast to be around, and a really great person for making the day of Neesha and Joe a bit more special.”
Snoop also posted a photo to Instagram suggesting he was more than happy to be their third wheel.
7. Serena Williams
I have long been a proponent of casual, comfortable wedding attire, but being the trendsetter she is, Serena Williams is way ahead of the curve.
During Ruth and Sam Kormoi's Miami Beach wedding, the wedding party wasn't surprised to see a celeb on their famous beaches. But after the ceremony, they were pleased to find that the leopard print bathing suit-clad Williams was not only willing to take a photo — she was asking them for one. The groom told People:
"I told my friend Eddie, 'Eddie, go and see if she wouldn't mind taking a picture.' So Eddie went and asked. He said she was ecstatic and would be happy to. She was even asking, 'Let me take a picture with the bride and groom!' "
8. Brad Pitt
Abi Lingwood had already found her knight in shining armor in her groom Daniel, but that didn't stop her from secretly hoping for another kiss on her wedding day. Though when the prospective kisser is A-list actor Brad Pitt, could Daniel really blame her?
While filming Fury near Buckinghamshire, England, Brad Pitt attended a meeting in the Stoke Park Hotel where the Lingwoods were celebrating their nuptials. While speaking with E! News, Abi says she almost didn't believe her husband when he said Pitt was sitting in the bar nearby. Until she heard a familiar American accent, that is.
"I actually gasped and said to myself, 'Oh my god, it really is you!' He congratulated us on our wedding said I looked great in my dress, shook our hands and said to pose for a picture. He was very accommodating. Unfortunately I didn't get a kiss from him!"
While the male half of Brangelina is no longer paired up, the Lingwood relationship is happily intact, according to Facebook.
If the movie Wedding Crashers taught us anything, it's that upstaging the bridal party is never a good idea. Unless you're a massive celebrity with a streak of good nature, in which case would you mind posing for a few pictures?
