Only a day after it was revealed that Mechad Brooks's James Olsen would assume the mantle of The Guardian on Supergirl, CW has offered our first look at National City's latest hero!

Along with the first image of the shield-wielding hero, The CW have released the following statement:

“James Olsen takes on the mantle of the classic DC Comics hero, Guardian. With his trademark shield intact, James will fight to protect National City alongside Supergirl”

As you can see above, the costume is heavily influenced by Guardian's usual get-up, minus the mainstay yellow color scheme. Fans of the Young Justice animated series will be familiar with the Mal Duncan version of the character - which looks to have inspired this surprising character development.

Much like Olsen, Duncan felt like a side player in the grand scheme of "The Team" and decided to assume the title of The Guardian. The Supergirl producers alluded to this in their statement, with Andrew Kreisberg stating

"James has a pretty big turn coming up. These next few episodes are going to make him realize that being a photographer...is not enough for him... James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he's going to become a vigilante. He's going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he's not going to tell her."

A strangely intriguing revelation to say the least. Fans of the Flarrowverse were convinced that if we were to ever see The Guardian on the small screen, it would be Diggle assuming the role. While this may dash the hopes of many who pulling for Diggle to become Guardian, I myself am looking forward to the James Olsen version of the character. James has always felt out of place in Supergirl and his character has never really experienced much development, so this recent announcement is certainly intriguing and I can only wonder at what the producers have planned for him. We can also hope that those plans include some yellow on the suit.
