There are many reasons why a movie might be renamed when it's released overseas. More often than not, it's down to language barriers and lack of comprehension — but not for #Disney's upcoming animated movie, #Moana. As it turns out, Moana is also the name of a super famous Italian porn star, and it looks like there's only room for one in Italy.

Moana Pozzi was a well-known and revered figure in Italy, who passed away in 1994 at the age of 33. While she skyrocketed to fame as an erotic movie star in the early '90s, she was also known for being a media savvy and articulate woman who campaigned for better sex education, the legalization of sex work and even ran for the mayor of Rome in 1993, receiving 1% of the total vote.

More Moana news:

Pozzi's unintentional involvement in the upcoming Disney movie was confirmed on Twitter earlier this week, after a CartoonBrew blog post theorized Pozzi was the reason behind Moana's name change in Italy and other parts of Europe:

Moana has now been renamed Vaiana — meaning "water from the cave" in Tahitian — in Italy, and Oceania (after the movie's location) in other parts of Europe (but that's mainly down to copyright issues over the word Moana).

Pozzi was so popular in Italy that she starred in her own animated movie (hence possible further confusion), called Moanaland, where she plays a porn star who exposes political corruption and takes down the Mafia. This plot differs somewhat to Disney's 16-year-old Polynesian heroine who is chosen by the Ocean to find the demigod Maui and save her people.

Moana is released on November 23, and stars Dwayne #TheRock Johnson as Maui and Auli'i Cravalho as Moana — or should we say, Vaiana. It's hard to say whether Pozzi would have minded her namesake being used in a kids' movie, but good thing they didn't rename it Moanaland instead.
