The day someone green-lights a Marvel Zombies Ghibli film directed by Xavier Dolan is the day I will be happy. Any day now...

While classic Bat-villains such as The Penguin and The Riddler have taken center-stage in Fox's prequel show, Gotham fans literally lost their minds trying to figure out whether the Dark Knight's greatest enemy of all has already appeared or not.

A number of contenders have vied for #TheJoker's crown across the past three seasons of Gotham. But in the eyes of diehard fans, there's only one Clown Prince of Crime and that's Jerome Valeska, the demented villain who supposedly died back in Season 2.

#Gotham has dropped hints about Jerome's legacy for quite some time, finally confirming back in August that Cameron Monaghan's fan-favorite character will return to the show — despite that awkward issue of being stabbed fatally in the neck.

So far, it's been rather unclear how 'The Joker' could come back from this. After all, the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't have any real powers of his own (apart from annoying the hell out of #Batman), but a new promo trailer for the second half of Season 3 may have just revealed how the Joker will return.

While most of the footage has been taken from Season 2 of Gotham, new shots of someone walking towards large, human-sized containers hint that Jerome could be inside, resurrected somehow through technology. The trailer as a whole focuses almost solely around the future Joker, so it's not too much of a stretch to imagine that's how Jerome could return, science be damned! This is a comic book show, after all.

A few months back, executive producer John Stephens discussed Jerome's return in more detail, telling Zap2it that;

“It is 100% our intention to bring Jerome back. We’re going to be playing it again this year and basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome. We’re building the architecture for him to come back.”

Frustratingly though, Jerome's focus in the new trailer doesn't confirm that he'll definitely return in full for the second half of Season 3. As the aforementioned interview continues, Stephens goes on to reveal that;

“You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist. Setting the stage that if there is a Season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth.”

Despite a drop in ratings, Gotham remains one of Fox's most watched scripted shows. Hopefully then, all of this groundwork will pay off when the show returns for a fourth season, especially if Jerome's return leads to what we think it will;

“He plays into the idea of transformation. When he comes back, you want to see that new version. That next step forward.”

Short of John Stephens screaming: "JEROME'S THE JOKER, HE'S THE JOKER YOU MORONS!", this is probably the clearest confirmation we're going to get that Jerome will become the Joker by the time Season 4 rolls around — just in case that smile and his maniacal laugh didn't make it clear enough.

DC fans have already been burned once this year by the way that director David Ayer edited out many of Jared Leto's scenes from Suicide Squad, so the pressure's on now for Gotham to restore the Joker to his rightful place as the one true Clown Prince of Crime. Fortunately, Gotham's Cameron Monaghan has received consistently rave reviews since the first day he cackled his way onto the show, so we're confident that Jerome's version of the Joker could be the one to beat.
