2016 wasn't a regular busy year for Jake Gyllenhaal, but that doesn't mean the Hollywood star wasn't making any films. Back in April, he brought out Demolition which opened to luke-warm reviews, but his next film, Nocturnal Animals is garnering some Oscar buzz, as it looks to be one of the best thrillers of the year. Check out the trailer below:

Thankfully he gets back to business in 2017, where he has four movies coming out — and he already has one planned for 2018. Let's take a look at Jake Gyllenhaal's upcoming movies; be sure to let me know in the comments which one you think looks best!

Release Date: 2017

Plot: This true story follows Jake Gyllenhaal's character Max Mermelstein: a Jewish hotel engineer who manages to set up a drug empire. He comes under pressure when asked to kill rival drug dealers.

This film marks Jake Gyllenhaal and director Antoine Fuqua's second collaboration, their first was on the hit movie, Southpaw. So far, not much is known about this movie, but when do know that Jake Gyllenhaal is in it, which is enough reason to make me excited!

2. Wildlife

Release Date: 2017

Plot: This drama centres around a young boy who witnesses his parents' marriage end in divorce after his mother finds another man. This film is based on the original novel, wrote by Robert Ford!

This film marks a directorial debut for Paul Dano, as well as his reunion with Gyllenhaal, whom he starred alongside in Prisoners. This film also stars Carey Mulligan (Inside Lleywn Davis) and Ex Oxenbould, who will be playing the kid. So far we don't know who Jake Gyllenhaal will be playing in this movie, but it's likely he's either playing the divorcee father, or the new man in the mother's life.

3. Stronger

Release Date: 2017

Plot: This inspiring story follows a Boston Marathon bombing victim who helps cops track down the murderers while struggling to recover from his intense trauma. This film is also based on the novel of the same name, which is the true autobiography by Jeff Bauman, who sadly lost his legs in the bombings.

This tragedy-ridden drama will be directed by Pineapple Express visionary David Gordon Green. He hasn't directed many movies in his career, as he's more of a producer, but his drama experience from 2013's Prince Avalanche will be put to good use for this film This film will also star Oprhan Black's Tatiana Maslany and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption).

4. Okja

Release Date: 2017

Plot: This ambitious action movie centres around Mija who tries to prevent a multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend, Okja (who just so happens to be a giant animal). This film may seem wacky but I'm sure it will make sense when we see a trailer sometime next year!

Looking at the above image from the set of this movie proves just how wacky this film is going to be. Director and writer Joon-ho Bong is fresh off doing the amazing 2013 cult phenomenon, Snowpiercer. I think this could be the film I'm most excited for in Jake Gyllenhaal's line up, purely to see Gyllenhaal play this exuberant looking character. Not to mention the fantastic actors that are starring alongside Gyllenhaal, with the likes of: Tilda Swinton, Steven Yeun and Giancarlo Esposito in the film also!

Release Date: May 26th, 2017

Plot: The full plot for this film isn't clear yet, but we do know it's about a space crew discovering life on Mars.

I know that plot is vague, but this film has a lot going for it so far, so I think it could be a big one next year. With the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson and Hiroyuki Sanada starring alongside Gyllenhaal, it boasts a stellar cast.

6. The Division

Release Date: 2018

Plot: Based off the game released in March 2016, a group of bio-terrorists unleash a version of smallpox on dollar bills which makes the disease spread rapidly thus creating a ruined New York where people fend for supplies and fight for their life everyday.

Video games to movies are a cursed idea, and the track record doesn't help, but I always thought this plot would be better as a movie rather than a game. Hitting theatres in 2018, Jake Gyllenhaal will be joined by Hollywood superstar Jessica Chastain for this action adventure. So far there's no director for this film that's in the early stages of production, but I have high hopes with the cast involved.

You can't deny that Jake Gyllenhaal is one of Hollywoods best and most consistent actors in the last 10 years, and that form looks to keep going with his movie schedule for the next two years. Personally I'd love to see the Los Angeles-born actor take on a superhero role of some kind; I think he'd be perfect! More importantly, I'd love to know what you guys think, so let me know in the comments below.
