The #HarryPotter universe is a bit like the mafia: Every time you think you're out, it pulls you back in. Hot on the heels of last month's news that J.K. Rowling has turned the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them trilogy into a five-parter (she has a mortgage to pay, y'all) in which we'll experience the dark wizard Grindelwald's reign of terror, #JohnnyDepp has been cast in the sequel.

Deadline reported last night that Depp will have a major role in Fantastic Beasts 2, which is set in Paris, transferring the wizarding action to the continent on which Grindelwald wreaked his legendary havoc. Depp's role is unknown, but #Grindelwald has yet to be officially cast — his brief cameo in the Fantastic Beasts trailer is shot from behind, keeping the actor's identity a deliberate mystery. That would make sense if an actor as iconic as Depp is stepping into Grindelwald's psychotic shoes.

On the other hand, there's been some speculation that Colin Farrell's Percival Graves may in fact be an alias of Grindelwald, so perhaps Depp will be playing a Frenchman with a dodgy accent and a questionable moustache — not for the first time...

Having recently settled his legal dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard out of court, Depp's career seems to be on the up once again — he'll next star in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, followed by a remake of Murder On The Orient Express directed by Kenneth Brannagh. Time will tell if audiences still have a hard-on for the former teen idol in the wake of Heard's allegations.

The Fantastic Beasts sequel begins shooting in Spring for a November 2018 release.

Will Depp play Grindelwald or another loony in Fantastic Beasts 2?
