Celebrities are renowned for jumping onto fad bandwagons, be it for dieting or beauty purposes, so it makes sense that celebrity moms would gladly dine on their afterbirth in order to absorb all of it's goodness and nutrients.

Placentophagy is the term given to the act of eating one's placenta after giving birth, and according to the science, it's a great source of iron and other nutrients. It could also be a way of staving off postpartum depression, but that it still to be proven. Fact or not, celebrity mothers just can't seem to get enough of their tasty womb linings.

1. Kourtney Kardashian

The reality star was very pro-placenta and raved about the benefits of her placenta pills. So, if you don't feel like frying your placenta up like a fine filet mignon, you can always have them made into tablets. Or, if you're feeling particularly sadistic, you could cook up a tasty feast and feed it to your unsuspecting family. Your placenta, your choice!

2. January Jones

January is the cheerleader for placentophagy and loves to spread the word about it's benefits. In an interview with British Glamour, January waxed lyrical about her experience:

“It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas, It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!”

Oh Betty, what would Don say about all this? We're also the only mammals who drive cars and fly planes, but yeah sure, it's weird that we don't eat our placentas just because other animals do.

3. Alicia Silverstone

Is she Clueless or is she onto something? Alicia is pretty much pro everything, pro-vegan, pro-save-the-planet and pro-animal-rights, so it's not surprising she'd happily chow down on her placenta.

The actress has even written a book about motherhood entitled The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning. In her guide she professes to the benefits she experienced when eating the bodily treat:

"It got to the point that my husband said, 'Did you have your happy pills today?' And I was really sad when they were gone. It really helped me"

4. Kim Kardashian

Well if Kourtney did it, Kim definitely has to give it a go. The reality star reportedly ingested her womb lining after giving birth to son, Saint West.

On her blog, she was sure to let fans know just what she was up to:

“Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good. I totally recommend it for anyone considering it,”

5. Gaby Hoffman

The Girls star made delectable drinks out of her insides in order to consume her afterbirth. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hoffman explained how she made her placenta more digestible:

“I made smoothies out of it for three weeks, I had a home birth, so my midwife and my doula took it and cut it up into 20 pieces and froze it, and every day, I put it in a blender with strawberries and blueberries and guava juice and a banana.”

Yummy! Does placenta count as one of your five-a-day?

6. Mayim Bialik

Mayim likes to blog about every aspect of her life, from veganism to judaism, she's happy to let the internet world know her views. This extends to her feelings about a mother's right to eat placenta. She wrote in response to her dad's message about placentas being bad for you in her blog, Kveller:

"Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth. End of story. It’s good for mammals to eat the placenta and we evolved for that purpose."

The Big Bang Theory star definitely supports the argument that we have evolved to eat our afterbirths. I think I still prefer to get my iron from a steak though.

7. Tamera Mowry

It turns out when twin sisters Tia and Tamera do anything, they have to do it together. Including eating Tamera's placenta on their reality show. Watch the video below, if you can stomach it:

Tamera mixed her insides with brandy to make it more palatable, that's a cocktail we won't be trying. I suppose the twins once shared a womb, so splitting one for dinner isn't too different?

Have any of these celebrities inspired you to eat your afterbirth after birth?
