Summer is over, which means the summer blockbuster season is over — and this year, it feels like a good thing. So far, 2016 hasn't been the best year for movies, but as you may well know, we're coming into Oscar season and that's when the quality films come in. Throughout the whole year, there were 2 films I was crazy excited for; Arrival (starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner) and La La Land. If you haven't heard about this movie then you should watch the gorgeous trailer below, and then we can talk about why it's going to be the best movie of the year.

1. The Music

First things first, let's talk about that absolutely beautiful piece of music there sung by Ryan Gosling (I know what you're thinking: he can sing too?!). The first thing I adored about this trailer was just how amazing this song was. 'City of Stars' is the name of this melancholic piano number, and I've had it on repeat since I first heard it.

The best thing about the music in this film is that we have the impeccably talented Justin Hurwitz doing the soundtrack. You may recognize his name from the film Whiplash, which had one of the best soundtracks in recent years.

2. The Visuals

Those 4 images in the above picture are all taken from the short 1.5 minute trailer, and as you can see, each of them are gorgeous. I genuinely think it's the most beautiful trailer I've ever seen! There's a real fairytale vibe that's consistent throughout the entire trailer, which leads me on to my next point...

3. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling

La La Land marks Emma Stone's and Ryan Gosling's third movie together, and cements their place as my all-time favorite movie couple. Their on-screen romance goes back as far as 2011 where in Crazy Stupid Love, Emma Stone's character tamed Ryan Gosling's character and made him settle down, which no other girl could. Their chemistry in this film was electric, and it was my favorite aspect of the movie! Their second film together was Gangster Squad, where the pair enthralled each other in 1949 Los Angeles. That brings us to 2016, where the pair will form another romance and delve into their undeniable chemistry once again in La La Land.

4. The Director, Damien Chazelle

At the young age of 31, La La Land director Damien Chazelle has a bright future ahead of him. Considering that Whiplash was only his second full-length motion picture, we have to have high expectations for the Rhode Island director. The good thing about Chazelle's work is that he not only directs his films, but he also writes them. He's written films such as: Whiplash, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Grand Piano and of course, La La Land. His writing for Whiplash was so good that it earned him a nomination for an Academy Award back in 2015 for Best Writing!

5. The Early Reviews

Unfortunately for me, this film doesn't open in Irish cinemas until early January, but it's out in November in most other places across the world! Fortunately, the early reviews are in and so far they are pretty amazing. As it stands right now, La La Land has an early Metascore of 90, and not only that, but it stands at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 44 reviews). The critical acclaim thus far is overwhelming — Brian Tallerico from RobertEbert.com was quick to praise the film's magic:

La La Land serves to remind us that movies can still be magical, and they can still provide the channel for us to see magic in the world around us. - Brian Tallerico

Next up is The Young Folks's Allyson Johnson, who also loved the La La Land:

La La Land has us with our eyes glued, feet tapping and hearts pounding with anticipation of just what wonder it's going to produce next. - Allyson Johnson

Lastly, we have Allan Hunter from The List who addresses the hype around the film:

La La Land really is as good as everyone claims. It is an irresistible, big-hearted valentine to starry-eyed dreamers and the enduring magic of the movies. - Allan Hunter

So there are just some of the reactions across the net about La La Land right now. Have I convinced you yet? I'm really passionate about this film doing well because if more people go to see it, more movies like this will be made. I really think we're on to something special with Damien Chazelle and co. here. If you're still not fully convinced, check out the second trailer below which is equally as magical!
