We're in for one hell of a ride when DC's TV shows return to The CW in October. The Legends of Tomorrow are tasked with protecting the timeline, Laurel Lance's death will have huge implications in Arrow, The Flash has Flashpoint to contend with, and Superman will soar onto the scene in Supergirl. But there's something much bigger on the way — The CW will be bringing the shows closer together as we build up to that huge, four-show crossover event in December. And what's the easiest way to connect the shows? Cameos, of course!
We knew the upcoming seasons of The CW's DC shows would feature more crossover episodes and cameos than we'd ever seen before, and now the first of these has come to light — thanks to new promo pictures, we know that Stephen Amell will guest star as Oliver Queen in the Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 premiere.
And his arrival has very interesting implications for the plot...
Tracking Down Damien Darhk
Like The Flash's promo pictures before it, this press release is laden with spoilers — as long as you know what you're looking for. Let's break it down.
There are two distinct scenes shown in the promotional photos. One takes place in the present day, and one in the past, as the Legends apprehend Albert Einstein. We can see Einstein hiding with the team (very conspicuously) in this 1940s van:
And it looks like they're hiding from Damien Darhk, who also appears in the promo shots:
We already know that Sara's on a personal mission to avenge her sister's death at the hands of Darhk, as we saw in the early teaser for Season 2. These stills seem to come just before Sara leaps into action and attacks Darhk, but it's unlikely she'll manage to take him down — Darhk is part of the Legion of Doom, confirmed to be the main antagonists for Legends of Tomorrow Season 2.
But it's likely Sara's mission — and that of the Legends — goes awry.
Lost In Time: What Happened To The Legends?
The second set of stills features Oliver Queen and newcomer Nate Heywood as they explore the Waverider, which seems to have crash landed.
Nate, described in the synopsis as "an unconventional and charming historian" is investigating the Legends — and he seems to have gone to Oliver for help.
So why would these two characters be exploring a crashed Waverider in the present day? According to the show's synopsis, the Legends will be divided in Season 2, as their mission leads to them being scattered across time. Nate takes it upon himself to rescue the hapless heroes, and now it seems he won't be alone in his quest, as Mick Rory is trapped in the present along with what remains of the Waverider.
The fact that these two very distinct scenes are both taken from the premiere episode seems to suggest that we won't discover how the Legends got separated until much later on in the season, drawing out the mystery as a season-arc plot. After all, Mick features in both the scene set in the 1940s and the modern day scene, implying that the modern day scenes take place after Mick visited the '40s with the Legends.
This is a rather atypical way of telling the story, chopping up the chronology and following two threads at once — the Legends before they got separated, and Nate's attempt to reunite them. Arrow follows a similar structure, with flashbacks telling half the story, but throwing time travel into the mix will make for very interesting, and possibly confusing viewing. And we can't wait!
