When the news broke that Making a Murderer's Steven Avery was engaged, we were full of hope that he'd finally found some happiness. However, only a couple weeks after the engagement was announced, it's been called off.

Many eyebrows raised in cynicism when it was announced that successful paralegal Lynn Hartman was engaged to Steven Avery, an inmate with an IQ of around 70 and a huge payoff coming his way, but we wanted to believe the best.

The news of the cancelled engagement was broken by Avery's former fiancee Sandra Greenman — read into that what you will — in a post on the Steven Avery & Brendan Dassey Project Facebook page:

I have a statement that I need passed around to groups. Steve called me two times tonight and wants everyone to know that Lynn and him are done. She has been in this relationship for money and publicity. His eyes are finally opened!!! Lynn received at least $5000 dollars from Dr Phil, and he thinks more. She got another $1000 for doing other shows. She also wanted to be on as many as possible. His words — she is a gold digger. He wants someone to contact Dr. Phil before Mon. show and let him know she was only in the relationship for money. I checked and double-checked with him to make very sure he wanted to put this put on and he said very much so."

Anyone who's seen Making a Murderer knows that Steven Avery has been through Hell and back with the justice system: Could it be that he's finally carved out some happiness for himself?

The Steven Avery Project Facebook page posted (in a post that has since been deleted) that Steven proposed to former paralegal Lynn Hartman. While Avery's fans and advocates have expressed a lot of joy for his new engagement, some have also questioned his fiancee's motives. Check out a post on the topic below.

Obviously, Steven's past with incarceration has left him vulnerable, but all we can hope for is that he finds happiness in this marriage. Good on you, Steven!

If you live on the moon and have therefore never watched Making a Murderer before, check out the trailer.

What do you think of Avery's recent engagement?
