(WARNING: The following contains potential plot SPOILERS for the upcoming Wolverine solo movie, Logan, both in the form of a brand new trailer and comic book-related speculation. Proceed with whatever level of caution your specially heightened senses suggest is wise.)

Now, if you're reading this article without having already watched the shiny new trailer for Wolverine's upcoming solo movie, Logan, then it's entirely possible that you're only skimming this first paragraph to ascertain the whereabouts of said trailer. Which, let's be honest, is a pretty reasonable thing to do. As such, let's not beat around the bush here. The trailer is...right here, as it happens:

And, as it turns out, it confirms a whole of the recent speculation regarding the movie's casting, plot and general tone. It also, however, has a whole lot to tell us about Logan's relationship with its apparent source material, the iconic Old Man Logan storyline from the comic books.

Y'know, the one with all the Hulk-murder and random, wild west dinosaurs. As it turns out, though:

Logan May Be Way Less Based On Old Man Logan Than We Thought

Y'see, though the trailer contains several apparent visual references to the original comic books, including a sort-of-nod to a once dinosaur-featuring car chase...

...that now features a distinct lack of dinosaurs...

...the vast majority of the trailer's similarities with the original comic book seem to be limited to the most basic of elements. For instance, both Old Man Logan and Logan look set to feature cool-looking jumps...

...but pretty much every X-Men movie thus far has featured much the same. Similarly, it's clear that Wolverine is pretty old in the movie...

....and that it will feature a desert-based setting....

...but other than that, the most obvious point of comparison with the original story line is the fact that Professor X...

...looks to have taken the comic book Hawkeye's place as "aging hero Wolverine has to drive around":

Beyond that, the most obvious comic book nods within the trailer seem to be based on entirely different (but still rather iconic) classic Wolverine storylines. Indeed, the presence of the likes of Donald Pierce and the Reavers...

...and X-23...

...seems to suggest that Logan is set to draw from a far wider trough of X-inspiration than merely Mark Millar's fan-beloved Old Man Logan. Heck, from the looks of it, the movie isn't even set in a truly post-apocalyptic wasteland...

...which suggests that the vast majority of Old Man Logan's central conceit — that supervillains have taken over the world, and destroyed it in the process — has been jettisoned in favor of a more grounded approach. Now, that may well prove to be a great call — Old Man Logan is a quintessentially "comic book-y" tale, which would have been painfully difficult to adapt faithfully — but in the meantime it may leave a few devoted fans of the original storyline with a slightly sour taste in their mouths.

Or, alternatively, it could turn out that the trailer is simply only telling part of the tale, and that many of the original storyline's plot beats and characters are simply being held back for the final product. In which case, get ready for a whole lot of cattle evisceration:
