Female power in Marvel movies is undeniable, what with superheroes such as #BlackWidow and #ScarletWitch of the #Avengers; Gamora and Nebula from #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy; and Storm, #JeanGrey, #Mystique, Psylocke and many more from the #XMen. However, the ladies of the Marvel Universe are clearly outnumbered and often overlooked because of the leading male characters.
Because of this, #Marvel does seem to be taking steps to redress the balance. The studio is adding many female characters to its slate, as demonstrated by the upcoming #CaptainMarvel movie, as well as other female characters in the form of #X23 and #Mantis joining in the big-screen glory.
However, while many female characters are joining the universe, many male ones have been there much longer, and because of this might have a problem sticking around. Will the studio have to start working on new ways to use the characters, other than just recasting them with younger actors? Could Marvel perhaps remedy the situation with gender swapping?
With that in mind, here are three female characters who could replace existing male ones in the #MarvelCinematicUniverse.
1. X-23 Could Replace Wolverine
Starting with the most obvious and probable choice, Laura Kinney, a.k.a X-23, is the 23rd attempt at creating a clone of #Wolverine. Laura has been pretty much confirmed for the new #Logan film, and people have been wanting her to come for awhile. As you probably know by now too, #HughJackman has already hinted that this will be his last movie as his role of Wolverine.
So, what now? No one can truly replace Jackman in the role, but what if nobody needs to? In the coming movie Logan, we can see a suggestion of the "Death of Wolverine" story arc, where Logan bravely sacrifices his life and Laura takes on the mantle of Wolverine. Logan has always been a father figure to Laura, and it does seem to be that way in the film, so a tragic event for Logan could certainly trigger something inside Laura that would propel her to step into his shoes.
While X-23 is a female clone of Wolverine, she has only two claws in her hands and one in each foot. Also, her skeleton is not completely fused with adamantium, which makes her healing factors much stronger than Wolverine's. She also possesses all of Logan's abilities — such as super agility and heightened senses — so we can still get all the bloody action we know and love. Laura has already replaced Logan as the All-New Wolverine, and allowing her to replace Logan on the big screen will show fans that #Fox is still following the comics.
2. Lady Thor Could Replace Thor
While Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, is not the most beloved #MCU character — mostly because of Portman's reported ambivalence to the role — #LadyThor remains one of the fiercest and most intense Marvel warriors. Even though this role will likely have to be recast, Lady Thor is a perfect opportunity for Marvel Phase 4, maybe covering up for a dead Thor or just replacing him altogether.
Thor doesn't seem to be slowing down, with Thor: Ragnarok set to release next year, we can totally see Thor take on the Odinson mantle and Jane finally take on the identity of Thor. This could provide variety within the MCU, something that seems to be a little bit of a problem of late.
Furthermore, with fans of Norse mythology and #Thor comics well aware that #Ragnarok is a huge event — symbolizing the death of all the gods — while some of us might not want it to happen, it is very likely that Thor Odinson will be killed in the battle, giving Jane the perfect opportunity to wield his hammer.
3. She-Hulk Could Replace Hulk
Now, can we all agree that no matter what, #SheHulk must appear in the MCU, and soon? Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner (the #Hulk himself) needed an immediate blood transfusion, and her only known relative was Banner, who transferred his gamma-radiated blood to Walters. She becomes a tamer version of Hulk, but with a few key differences. First of all, she can't revert to her normal skin tone, but she does retain her intelligence and still has almost Hulk-like strength.
Adding She-Hulk to the mix could happen for a few reasons. While the killing off of Hulk would be illogical since he is needed to defeat Thanos, Hulk does pose a flight risk, potentially running away like he did at the end of #AgeOfUltron, thus leaving room for Jennifer to take over. Who wouldn't want to watch Jennifer Walters go up against Matt Murdock, or #Daredevil, in a legal face-off? This would spark a great crime-centric dynamic and add another layer to what we all love about Daredevil.
Also, She-Hulk is the leader of many teams, such as #AForce and #LadyLiberators, who would look sick on the big screen. Seeing a woman with such physical strength could be inspirational for young fans around the world, which is always a bonus.
Expect to see Logan hit theater screens on March 3, 2017. And that's it! Did I miss anybody? Do you think there are enough female Marvel movie characters? Make sure to check out my other posts and join Creators.co to make your own!
