Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2, Episode 4 "Abominations."

Last week's episode of Legends Of Tomorrow shocked us all when Ray Palmer and Nate Heywood had to work together to destroy Ray's Atom suit which had fallen into the wrong hands. It came as a major blow to not only the team but to comic book fans who knew just how important that suit is to the character's identity.

And this week's installment highlighted his feeling of powerlessness without his suit, and he even ended up questioning his usefulness to the team of #superheroes. However, he managed to overcome his fears and helped Professor Stein defeat a zombified Mick Rory. In return, Rory gave Ray something he had been craving — a purpose. As Mick handed Ray Leonard Snart's infamous cold gun, the Ray Palmer we know and love had been reborn.

Life After The Atom

Ever since Ray was introduced to us back in #Arrow Season 3, we knew that wherever he went the suit would accompany him. The Atom suit was his creation and he loved the fact that he could use his technology to help people. In fact, he almost died when the suit destroyed the Queen Consolidated building and ended up shrinking him.

Ray Palmer is the Atom through and through — he is renowned for his quirky attitude, his pearly whites as his good-hearted nature. Oh, and he is very well-known for his ability to shrink. Without the Atom suit, he can't be the person that he loves being. And this week's episode of Legends went to great lengths to highlight that.

However, that doesn't mean that he can't be a new version of that person. With Snart's cold gun, Ray can now venture back out into the field with his time-travelling cohorts. He has proven himself in physical combat many times, but now he finally has a new way of protecting himself and taking out enemies before they can even get close. He also has experience firing beams thanks to his suit, so he will have no problem adapting to fire ice-rays at any time pirates.

Going "Rogue"

Mick Rory may be a Legend now, but he's notorious for being the criminal Heat Wave. Both he and his partner Captain Cold ruled Central City until #TheFlash came along and stopped them. But during their crime wave, they were known as the Rogues. When Snart died a hero, Rory didn't just lose partner, he lost his best friend. However, throughout Season 1 of Legends, he slowly built up a friendship with Ray whom he lovingly referred to as "haircut." The fact that Rory handed his best friend's cold gun over to his new friend is almost like their relationship coming full circle.

Mick seemed to grow attached to Ray.

Ray genuinely seems to like Mick, and unlikely as it may seem, it appears that the feeling is mutual. Furthermore, the fact that Mick told Ray he was looking for a new partner suggests that we might see the two of them involved in a lot more capers together, something we can expect to see next week as the gang travel to the 1980s.

But the question is, could all this time together have an attitude adjustment on Ray? These two are complete opposites of each other yet somehow Ray managed to somewhat change Rory for the better. Could the same thing happen to Ray? It would surely make for some intriguing storytelling if the kind-hearted former Atom ended up becoming Heat Wave's full-time partner and the two ended up thieving together. Oh, now that would certainly be entertaining.

Captain Cold 2.0

Now that Ray has Leonard Snart's cold gun and has formed an alliance with his partner, could we see Ray going full-on Captain Cold? After all Snart wore the goggles to shield his eyes from the blinding light that radiates from his cold gun — and Rory does the same with his — so could we see Ray adopting Snart's entire wardrobe and gimmick, essentially becoming the successor of Captain Cold.

Heat Wave Mick Rory has entrusted Ray with his best friend's legacy and as a result, it has become a healing process for the both of them. Rory can use this new alliance to help deal with his friend's absence while this new outlook will revitalize Ray's position on the team. They both have a purpose and can help each other through these uncharted territory. Captain Cold may be gone, but his legacy lives on in Mick Rory and Ray Palmer.

This week's episode of Legends Of Tomorrow ended up being of major importance for Ray Palmer who was beginning to feel obsolete without his Atom suit. But when Mick ended up becoming a real-life zombie, both he and Professor Stein highlighted their worth as they helped turn Mick back into a human. And in return, Heat Wave gave the former Atom a new purpose — carrying on Captain Cold's legacy and becoming his new partner. This is a major twist tat none of us saw coming, but it does indeed allude to some exciting possibilities!
