Selena Gomez is taking a career hiatus to focus on living happily and healthily in an attempt to battle to the symptoms of lupus, a chronic illness that the 24-year-old revealed she suffered from last year.
The pop star has cancelled dates in her 'Revival' tour to battle the depression, anxiety and panic attacks that often follow being totally run-down with the symptoms of lupus and, in typical Selena spirit, she has been totally candid with her fans about it.
"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."
When Selena was diagnosed with lupus, she not only had to deal with the incurable autoimmune condition that causes fever, painful joints and malaise among other symptoms, but she was also forced to battle vicious rumors.
While the young star was undergoing chemotherapy to treat the condition last year, some unscrupulous tabloids reported that she was in fact in rehab for alcoholism. This would be enough to break many young people's spirit, but Gomez turned the other cheek until she was feeling well enough to speak the truth.
"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.' I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again."
Luckily, Selena's fan base always have her back and, in spite of the cancelled tour dates, they have been sending her well wishes through cyber space as she focuses on recovery:
Clearly in this situation, Selena's health and well being is the most important thing and I hope that some peace and calm in her life will help her to conquer the mental health demons she has been facing.
Props to Selena for having the courage to speak out about experiencing mental health issues. Too many people suffer in silence over fears of being seen as weak or being stigmatized by those around them, so anything that raises awareness is always a positive. Get well soon Selena!
