We might have a long time to wait until #StarWars8 finally hits cinemas, but MakingStarWars has got us covered, dishing about three mysterious characters from Episode VIII. And it's about time, too — ever since Benicio del Toro (Sicario), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), and Kelly Marie Tran (College Humor) were announced as appearing in Star Wars 8, fans have been wondering what role they would play in the film.
Now, we have a much better idea of who these characters are — and why our theories about them were wrong.
Benicio del Toro: Man In Black
When The Wrap first reported Toro's casting, they claimed he was going to play the villain for Star Wars Episode 8, adding another antagonist to the likes of Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke. Now, however, it seems that this isn't the whole story — and if Toro really is a villain, our heroes don't realize this at first.
Benicio del Toro has been described as a classic “man in black.” As in he wears all black and he’s dangerous.... It doesn’t appear the heroes see del Toro as a bad guy, at least not at first. We think he’s connected to the casino set we talked about sometime ago.
The "casino set" that MakingStarWars mentions is part of the subplot that was filmed in Dubrovnik. Multiple leaks and rumors have mapped out most of this plot, in which Finn embarks on a mission to find out who tried to assassinate Leia at Han's funeral. And it looks like Laura Dern's character is connected to this story too.
Laura Dern: Rich Socialite
This one really does come as a surprise, and debunks a popular theory that Laura Dern is playing Leia's old friend from the Rebellion, who we met in Marvel's Princess Leia comic. The MakingStarWars report aligns Dern not with the Resistance, but with the formally-dressed people on the Dubrovnik set — it seems this romantic walled city is the site of some serious partying.
She is very aristocratic and fancy in a way we haven’t really seen in 'Star Wars' before. Her look is unique. Someone compared her design to 'The Hunger Games'-meets-'Star Wars'. Dern wears a “fancy” dress and ... she has pink hair. Sources are at a loss for words when they tried to describe her hair which is very ornate, almost like something out of the Outlander Club in 'Attack of the Clones'.
This is definitely not what we expected for Dern, who is best known for her role as the grounded and practical Dr Ellie Satler from Jurassic Park. If Dern's character is involved in this party-planet subplot, she could either be a friend to the Resistance, or one of Toro's lackeys.
It certainly seems as though this beautiful planet is, underneath all the glitz and glamor, just another hive of scum and villainy. Finn's going to need a guide to help him navigate all this — and that's where Tran's character comes in.
Kelly Marie Tran: Spy For Hire
We don't know much about Tran's character — other than director Rian Johnson is really excited about her role — but ever since she was cast there have been rumors that Tran was introduced as a love interest for Finn, and the new report seems to support this.
In the near future we will have details to share on a jumpsuited Kelly Marie Tran and her role in the film and how she ends up tangled up with Finn in their shared story. Her look is almost the opposite of Dern’s character. She’s just very normal looking but her situation is supposedly really cool.
A few months ago, another Star Wars spoilers blog reported that Tran's character was an "information broker" who sometimes worked for the First Order. Because Finn met her during his time as a stormtrooper, he supposedly reaches out to her in Star Wars 8 for help on his mission to find out who tried to kill Leia.
Although the new MakingStarWars report doesn't give much concrete information on Tran's character, so far it lines up with the other rumors we've heard already. This is shaping up to be one hell of subplot!
Tell us in the comments: Do you think Benicio del Toro's character is evil?
