With two years between Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and its sequel, fans have been churning out Star Wars Episode 8 theories in abundance. Not one potential plot hint has been left unturned, and it might be that some spoilers are lurking in these internet musings — and if not, then at least they're an entertaining read. Join us as we collect the best and weirdest, and who knows, you might just stumble across that big plot twist everyone's trying to guess.

Palpatine's Granddaughter

Taking as it as read that Luke Skywalker is Rey's father (and that theory's been written about so much we're not even going to bother to include it), this theory turns instead to Rey's mother, postulating that she was the secret daughter of Emperor Palpatine a.k.a. Darth Sidious.

Drawing a parallel with Mara Jade — Luke's wife in the Expanded Universe and the assassin known as the Hand of the Emperor — this theory is a bit far fetched but might just end up being true.

Snoke Will Possess Kylo Ren

One of the darkest arts in the Dark Side of the Force is the practice of essence transfer, a method of transfering one's consciousness to another body, and therefore extending one's life. In the Expanded Universe novels, Darth Sidious succeeded in doing this by creating several clones of himself and transferring his consciousness into them.

The theory is: Snoke is planning to do this with Kylo Ren, grooming his young apprentice to accept Snoke's essence later on, granting Snoke a longer life. This is probably the creepiest Star Wars 8 theory you'll read all day.

Rey Is The Chosen One

Forget about her parents — this theory states that Rey's legacy is far grander than a mere matter of DNA. Connecting to the prophecy of the Chosen One from the prequels, this Star Wars Episode 8 theory is based on a supposed plot leak about the origin of the Force itself.

According to the leak, Rey is one of two children who first discovered the Force in a tree. The boy ran away and started a Dark Side cult, while the girl became the first Jedi. This girl is the Chosen One, and her soul has been reincarnated in many forms — including that of Anakin Skywalker. It sounds nuts, but it might just be crazy enough to be true.

Snoke Created Rey In A Lab

Or maybe Rey is distinctly less magical, and was created in a lab by Supreme Leader Snoke — using Luke Skywalker's DNA no less. This is thanks to Luke's missing hand, severed in Empire Strikes Back, which was seized by Imperial sympathizers who later formed the First Order.

This would make Rey a female clone of Luke (a la X-23 in the Marvel universe), who was deemed a failed experiment and abandoned on Jakku. Because... reasons? This theory is definitely light on proof, but it's a fun possibility.

Ren's Only Power Is Vader's

A deep dive into the twisted psyche of Star Wars' new villain, this Star Wars 8 theory explores the possibility that Kylo Ren and Ben Solo are actually two distinct personalities — and that Ren needs to use his Vader-like helmet in order to harness the Force.

It's a little convoluted, and perhaps an over-complication of some pretty simple plot points in The Force Awakens, but this does explain some gaps in Kylo Ren's logic. It also explores Ren's obsession with Darth Vader, and why it drives him further towards the Dark Side. Kinda.
