Given the endless stream of perfectly composed models and actresses whose angelic faces spread themselves across our magazines, screens and news feeds day in day out — to quote Dolly Parton — it sometimes feels like "there's no such thing as natural beauty." But judging by the stunning photographs Peter Lindbergh has shot for the 2017 Pirelli Calendar, real beauty does exist and it's 100% makeup and photoshop free.
Snapping the likes of #NicoleKidman, Penélope Cruz, Rooney Mara, Alicia Vikander, #RobinWright, #JulianneMoore, Helen Mirren, #UmaThurman and Kate Winslet, Lindbergh has captured a dazzling raw essence of beauty within these powerful women that most photographers can only dream of capturing.

Speaking to E! News, Lindbergh had a set idea for what he wanted to achieve with this years calendar:
"I wanted to use the 2017 Calendar to convey a different kind of beauty."
He then went on to say:
"Through the Pirelli Calendar I've tried to convey a different message, which is that beauty is far more than what advertising offers us today. My aim was therefore to portray women in a different way: and I did this by calling in actresses who've played an important role in my life, getting as close as possible to them to take my photos."
Alongside the photos you see here, there are over forty images in the calendar itself, all of which are shot in striking black and white.
The photoshoot itself took over two months to complete across five different cities. From Berlin to New York, London, LA and Le Touquet, Lindbergh travelled the world to photograph his makeup-free muses.
Lindbergh went on to tell E! that what he was trying to do was to portray his stunning subjects through their inner beauty, and how they felt during the shoot:
"I wanted to portray women not in terms of their perfection, but through their feelings and emotions. That's why I called this edition of the Calendar 'Emotional': not some artificial perfection, but the real world and the emotions that well up behind the faces of these women."
And it wasn't just Lindbergh who was having a wonderful time behind the camera, Nicole Kidman also found herself feeling at ease in the bare-faced shoot saying to him:
'I don't know why I'm having so much fun. No one has ever photographed me like this. No one has ever seen this part of me and it's really beautiful.'
