Suicide Squad just topped Captain America: The Winter Soldier's impressive box office total, and the bad guys made it look as easy as A, B, DC.

In its seventh weekend at the box office, Squad took around $4.7m to increase its US total $313.8m. Globally, it now stands at a huge $718.9m — that's higher than several Marvel movies, including Iron Man 2 ($624m), Thor: The Dark World ($644m) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714m). All of those movies had a budget equal to or higher than Squad, making DC's supervillain movie an undeniable success.

Don't get carried away, though: Suicide Squad isn't in any danger of toppling the $773m taken by Guardians of the Galaxy. What it does mean is that the prospects of a sequel, which has yet to be confirmed, are looking pretty strong right now.

DC currently has two dates scheduled for mystery movies — one in October 2018, one in November 2019 — but there are at least four movies which could swoop in and steal those slots. Most likely is Ben Affleck's The Batman, while Doug Liman's Dark Universe is also in development now. Throw in Man of Steel 2 and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn spin-off, and the chances of getting Suicide Squad 2 before 2020 look pretty remote.

For more DCEU gossip:

Marvel probably shouldn't be too worried, though — at least two of their movies next year, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, have an excellent chance of breaking the $800m barrier and closing in on the big $1bn.

Over at DC, all eyes will be on Justice League: Can Zack Snyder deliver a movie with strong critical reviews? That will be the key to getting Batman, Wonder Woman and the gang past the magical $1bn milestone. Expect a new trailer for Justice League around December or January, and the first trailer for Guardians before then.

Justice League arrives November 17, 2017. Guardians Vol. 2 hits May 5, 2017.

Do you think Suicide Squad deserves its box office success?
