Green Goblin Willem Dafoe slams Spider-Man reboot
Norman Osborn is not pleased. When Norman is not pleased, he might partake in some unpleasant actions, such as dangle a young police captain's daughter over the Brooklyn Bridge, blow up a few Oscorp board members or kidnap a terrified Aunt May.
Wisconsinite actor Willem Dafoe might not be the delirious psychopath who caused the second most-impacting death in Spidey's life (after a certain uncle's), but he has strong words for the new rebooted franchise launched in 2012 by Columbia Pictures, which he unfavorably compared to the 2002 Sam Raimi film he starred in, Spider-Man:
I saw a trailer for the first Spider-Man reboot and I thought, 'This is crazy!' It's not shot for shot, but it's the same story. I thought, 'This is sort of a cynical approach to making money!'
Contrasting his attack on the reboot, Dafoe had a good amount of praise reserved for the first Spider-Man movie, which pioneered a new generation of large-budget superhero movies based on Marvel characters in the early 21st century:
I like 'Spider-Man,' the first one that I was involved in, because although you can argue all sorts of things, from my perspective it was very pure. It really was. The way Sam Raimi approached it, it was pure in its intention... This real, genuine innocence; it wasn't indicated. Then, after that, it became more difficult because it's hard to achieve that when it's gotten some kind of attention and a certain level of success.
Despite his criticism of the reboot, it's necessary to point out that Mr. Dafoe had no complaints about the fact that Chris Cooper will take over the role of the Green Goblin in upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2:
You know, in the theater, people play the same role all the time.
Dafoe admitted he hadn't watched The Amazing Spiderman (only the trailer), and he didn't seem too keen to do it in the immediate future, either:
The older I get, I don't have the time to do everything that I want to do.
What do you think? Are the new Spiderman movies shameless rip-offs of the Sam Raimi trilogy or should good old Willem watch them first before slamming 'em? Let us know, as always, in the comment section below the goblin-infested gifs.
