A few months back AMC announced that a Walking Dead Spinoff series was in the works and would be arriving in 2015, but since then it's all gone quite on the zombie outbreak front. TWD message boards and fan forums have been full of speculation about what direction the show will take, with theories suggesting it will be a prequel and could feature characters from the original show.

While the idea that the spinoff could be a prequel is still very much a possibility, it seems that the chances of seeing previously-introduced characters are slim, after TWD executive producer and FX guru Gregory Nicotero confirmed that the spinoff will be a complete standalone.

We’re sort of treating the spin-off as a completely separate entity. That was something that was very, very important when the notion of a companion series was even brought up. Many of us, the actors and the executive producers, wanted to make sure that anything we did, we didn't want it to diminish our story, our storyline, our characters and the momentum that we have. So the intent is that it is going to be its own standalone world.

Back in October TWD creator Robert Kirkman revealed that the spinoff would take place in a "really different location with completely different people" so we'll be saying goodbye to Georgia and seeing the zombie outbreak in a different part of the world. Where that location will be and when the action will be set, remains to be seen.
