Calm down, internet: Wonder Woman will NOT be from Krypton

A few days ago, Jett over at the Batman-on-Film Facebook page inadvertently sent the internet into mini-meltdown mode with a bit of speculation during a Q&A session with fans on the page. What was it that got fans of Wonder Woman in such an uproar? This:

With all that said, I'd bet a year's pay — in MONOPOLY money, of course — that the "Amazons" of this cinematic DCU will be descendants of those "ancient Kryptonians" who attempted to set up Kryptonian outposts throughout spacedom thousands and thousands of years ago.

He went on to do a bit more speculating and theorizing for fun with the following:

Furthermore, I say that Wonder Woman will be powered-down, if you will, relative to Superman because these Amazons have evolved and adapted to living on Earth for hundreds of centuries. And since Kryptonians are produced without any "He'n and She'n" — Jor El and Lara excluded — couldn't this original Kryptonian on Earth have used this reproductive science to create an all-female race? I say yes!

Again, Jett had clearly stated that is was just a personal bit of guesswork, a hypothetical "What if?" situation if ever there were one, but of course, because it was the internet, people ran with it, and more than a few websites ran the story as being a legitimate industry rumor. Facepalms all around.

But Devin Faraci over at Badass Digest has reached out to his industry sources regarding this annoyingly energetic rumor, and the response he got should squash it dead in its tracks:

Yesterday a rumor blazed across the internet, and it turns out it was the first bullshit movie rumor of 2014 - that Wonder Woman in Batman vs Superman would be Kryptonian. Everybody got mildly irritated. But it turns out they didn't have to be - multiple sources are telling me that this concept for Wonder Woman's origin is not going to be used in the film. It seems like Batman On Film was just making stuff up and floating it.

It says something about Batman vs Superman that everybody believed this rumor; it was never seen as too stupid to be true. This is pretty much what we're expecting from the movie. The bar is low, it seems.

Now, had he checked his sources, he would have realized that Jett wasn't deliberately "making anything up" and had been explicit that he was just theorizing (I'd point out that Badass Digest was one of the sites who ran the speculation as a legitimate rumor), so this is perhaps just a case of backpedaling on the part of BAD.

But beyond the comic book writers of ye olde internet throwing shade at one another, fans should be happy that Wonder Woman's Amazonian origins will remain intact. Faraci did make an interesting point when he assessed people's collective doubt about the quality of this film as being at an all-time high. Perhaps this will assuage fans that writers aren't playing as fast and loose with the source material as we fear.

Let me hear your thoughts in the comments below.

P.S. I'm totally coining the phrase "nerd-shade" as a thing.
