Johnny Depp to play notorious Boston gangster after all?
Johnny Depp might play notorious Boston mobster Whitey Bulger after all.
The Public Enemies star was initially set to portray the criminal and FBI informer in Black Mass for director Barry Levinson. But reportedly the budget wasn’t large enough for Depp's normal fee. The expensive thespian opted out, financing fell through.
Now, rumors that Black Mass may be revived are spreading like wildfire (actually it’s just Deadline reporting on it), with Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace director Scott Cooper considering to helm the movie.
Deadline also reports that Depp may be cast after all.
The crime flick would center on Bulger’s relationship with John Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood friend of the criminal. Connelly employed Bulger to help him bring down the Italian mob, while Bulger used the opportunity to get rid of some unwelcome competition.
Connelly was supposed to be played by Warrior star Joel Edgerton. No word if the actor is still attached.
