Gotham script leaked! Spoilers and villains revealed!

by Posted on

There are two important things for fans to know about this leaked script for Fox's upcoming Gotham pilot: it might be fake, and it doesn't look good.

A lot can change. Written words might come to life when spoken by the well-chosen cast of actors they have lined up (Donald Logue, Ben McKenzie, Jada Pinket Smith etc) - and this is reportedly only a draft, in any case.

Anyway, to the revelations.

We all knew that this series was going to follow the young Jim Gordon as he investigated the death of Bruce Wayne's parents. But many had hoped that we would not be given too many of the established Batman characters too soon. Instead fans hoped to see a Gotham overrun by crooks and corruption, strange and twisted enough to give rise to Batman and his enemies.

Well anyone hoping that will be disappointed. This script introduces:

- Oswald Cobblepot - a mid level thug in Fish Mooney (Pinkett Smith)'s crew, who is apparently referred to as looking like a penguin every time he appears.

- A down on his luck comedian at Fish Mooney's nightclub, whose jokes Mooney really likes.

- A young girl called Ivy who has cruel parents and lives in an apartment overwhelmed with houseplants.

- A 14-year-old female cat burglar, who likes cats.

- A coroner who works for the GCPD who has somehow remained in his job despite a tendency to provide detectives with all pertinent medical information in the form of riddles.

Five potential villains all in the first episode? Seems a bit like overkill.

Add to this the fact that by all accounts Jim Gordon is in this episode a total dope - wide eyed and naive about everything. He is taken around Gotham by Harvey Bullock, asking dumb questions wherever he goes. It's like he's a stand-in for the audience, and the audience are a group of silver-haired bread-baking old women who have never even seen a Batman poster, let alone a watched a movie or read a comic.

Then again - and you might start to hope so by this point - the script could be a complete fake. The project is being developed by Bruno Heller, who was responsible for The Mentalist and Rome. Would he really write dialogue such as this, from Jim Gordon's fiance?

BARBARA (blithely): Jim, you are the cleverest, bravest, goodest man in Gotham.

The goodest? Really? All you can say is - hopefully not.

But what do you think? Is it real? Could this script actually work? How many villains would you find too many for the first episode?
