Tragedy strikes Gandalf's horse Shadowfax

by Posted on

We first saw him in The Lord of The RIngs: The Two Towers. Gandalf whistles, and from across the plain, a white horse comes running.

That horse is Shadowfax, the lord of all horses of the race of the Mearas, the greatest horses of Middle-earth. Well now, it is sad to say, Shadowfax is no more.

Blanco the name of the horse that played Shadowfax in The Lord of The Rings recently passed away. A long letter was posted of the website of its owner Cynthia Royal, in which she wrote that it died peacefully. She even wrote of her belief that the animal recognized its time was over:

while kneeling down by his side, I asked Blanco if it was his ‘time’. Without a second of hesitation, he turned his head to me, looked me straight in the eye and at that moment, I knew he was ready.

Blanco was the star of many films aside from The Lord of the Rings such as Hercules - and it even did voice work for the video game Red Dead Redemption. But it is for Shadowfax that Blanco will probably always be best known.
