Since 2009 when Seth Grahame-Smith's classic/zombie mashup Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hit the shelves, fans have been positively bitey for a on-screen adaptation of the novel. However, the film version of Zombies has been plagued (zombie humor) by a series of production complications since the outset. But fear not, proper zombie lovers: according to Deadline, it looks like engines are full steam ahead for a September start date!
Despite the earlier issues, Zombies moves forward as a film with some serious cred behind it. The script for the movie adaptation was written in part by David O. Russell, the Oscar nominated director behind The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle. Additionally, one of the producers of the film is Natalie Portman, who was initially on board to star as Elizabeth Bennet but has since stepped aside for a behind-the-scenes position.
Those fond of British drama will likely recognize the young lady taking Portman's place however! Actress Lily James is stepping in as Elizabeth. James is currently best known as Lady Rose on the Emmy-nominated series Downton Abbey. Also tapped to star in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is actor Sam Riley, who was recently seen in Disney's box office hit Maleficent. Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down), who wrote the script with Russell, will be directing.
Personally, I didn't like the novelization of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at all. Yes, I'm a massive fan of British literature and total purist when it comes to such things, but it felt like Grahame-Smith hadn't actually read Austen's book at all: just the Cliff's Notes. All of that being said, I will probably give the film adaptation a chance. Lily James is delightful as Rose on Downton and David O. Russell writes a killer script.
