Something strange might be happening...

While Twin Peaks was never given the redemption Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was, it certainly went down in history as a cult classic. Now, io9 has revealed that sources say Agent Dale Cooper is being reassigned to Coulson's new S.H.I.E.L.D. team. Kyle MacLachlan, known for his roles in Showgirls and the movie Dune, has been cast in as "The Doctor", a guest role that might make a sci-fi fan giggle, but will certainly make a True Believer hyperventilate just a little.

You're a bit strange, Matt.

After months of casting speculation and a tiny whizz of excitement deflation post-SDCC, it seems like Marvel is either throwing fans a red herring or making another (for lack of a better word) ballsy move concerning the upcoming Doctor Strange film. While there is no confirmation on whether MacLachlan's character is actually Doctor Strange himself, the announcement comes in the midst of casting debates, so this is a huge move for Marvel to make as it ramps up the show for its' second season.

While MCU-verse characters have certainly crossed over to appear in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (among them Nick Fury, Lady Sif, and Agent Maria Hill) this would be the first time a movie franchise character would be introduced via television.

His face doesn't look very Strange to me.

While the show does feature several doctors, scientists and agents, the announcement still smells of Marvel trickiness.

On a personal note, I believe MacLachlan will either take up the role of a new character (who happens to be a doctor) or may play a doctor within Marvel canon that isn't Strange. With his looks, I personally wouldn't want to see him in Strange's outfit (nothing against the guy -- he simply doesn't fit my Strange aesthetic). With the role only being a guest spot and little to no confirmed context behind the casting announcement, though, this could just be another leaf on the wind.

UPDATE: According to TV Line, Maclachlan is indeed signed on for a major guest role - Skye's Father!
