Celebrities might appear to have it all, but just like us, their lives are fraught with difficulties and made even more complicated by the pressure that fame and money can put on a family.

All of the stars below have been betrayed by a close friend or family member seeking to exploit their fame for their own personal gain, and when you read how being in the public eye can turn people against each other, maybe you'll be glad you're not famous after all.

7. Jennifer Aniston and her Mother, Nancy Dow

Jennifer Aniston and her mother, Nancy Dow, have been estranged since 1996 after Dow gave an interview about her daughter without Jen's permission. Although the pair are supposedly reconciled these days, they still aren't close and Nancy didn't receive an invite to Jennifer's surprise wedding earlier this year.

Aniston has criticized her mom's attitude towards her appearance growing up claims that it has affected her self-esteem, she explained:

"She was critical. She was very critical of me. Because she was a model, she was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn't. I never was. I honestly still don't think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine."

In 1999, Nancy Dow also wrote an embarrassing tell-all book about her daughter entitled From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir which ensured that she wasn't invited to Jennifer's first wedding with Brad Pitt either. Ouch.

Nancy died on May 25 2016 and reportedly she and Jennifer reconciled shortly before her death.

6. Ryan Reynolds and a Close Friend

Ryan Reynolds was recently betrayed by one of his closed friends in a particularly low blow. Trying to sell pictures of the actor's baby daughter he had been entrusted with to the press.

The Deadpool actor spoke out about how "devastating" the experience was, especially because he only shared pictures of his daughter, James, to his closest inner circle. He explained to GQ magazine that:

"A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around. I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks. I don’t think he thought he would ever be caught. But it’s a pretty narrow group of people that I would send photos like that to. They’re just, like, my closest family and my closest friends."

Fame really does let you know who your true friend are.

5. Rihanna and her Father, Donald Fenty

Rihanna's father, Donald Fenty, was an alcoholic and a crack addict when she was a child. He also used to domestically abuse her mother in front of his young daughter. Despite all this the singer was willing to keep her father in her life when she became famous.

However in 2009, Donald Fenty betrayed his daughter after she was savagely beaten by Chris Brown by selling his story to the press while pretending to be a loving father. In reality he didn't even try to reach out to Rihanna after the incident. The pop star told Vogue magazine that:

"He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check."

4. Jude Law and an 'Immediate Family' Member

The press knew so much about Jude Law's life that he testified at the News of the World phone hacking trial accusing the British tabloid of delving into his personal affairs, but the truth about who was giving up secrets about the star was far more upsetting.

In court, Law learned that one of his 'immediate family' members was leaking information about his personal life and whereabouts to the press and that his phone hadn't been hacked at all.

The name of the guilty party was never revealed to the public, but it was written on a piece of paper in court and given to Jude to look at. What a sucker punch.

3. Angelina Jolie and Her Father, John Voight

Angelina Jolie and her actor father, Jon Voight were estranged for almost ten years after he told Access Hollywood that he thought his daughter needed help for her "serious mental health problems."

Needless to say, airing Angelina's dirty laundry like this in such a public setting did not go down well and the major rift that developed between the two is more than just a case of hurt pride.

Jolie was in the process of adopting Maddox at the time, and her father's accusations had the power to disrupt the adoption process that Angelina had been pouring her heart and soul into for close to a year.

Jolie and her father have gotten over the feud and are now civil with each other, but it will take time to heal the rift and they still hold each other at an arm's length.

2. Drew Barrymore and Her Mother, Jaid Barrymore

Drew Barrymore has famously said that she "didn't really have parents" and the way that her mother treated her when she was a child was a serious betrayal.

Hungry for the Hollywood life, Jaid Barrymore attended a parade of star-studded parties as her daughter's guardian where Drew was exposed to alcohol and drugs from a young age. The lack of responsible parental supervision led to Barrymore already drinking at age 9 and snorting cocaine at age 13. The actor was in rehab by the time she was just 14 years old.

Barrymore filed for emancipation while she was still a teenager and her relationship with her mother has been permanently damaged ever since. After Drew separated from the family, Jaid didn’t help matters by allegedly selling Drew’s baby clothes and E.T. memorabilia on the Internet.

In a 2014 interview with Marie Clare, Drew revealed that, although she loves her mom, she cannot be close to her right now. She explained:

"My relationship with my mom is so complicated. I've always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversations about it. However, it hasn't enabled me to lessen the distance. It's the hardest subject in my life. I've never just been angry with her. I've always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can't really be in each other's lives at this point."

1. Lindsay Lohan and Her Father, Michael Lohan

Michael Lohan has lost his daughter's trust multiple time by selling scandalous stories about her life to the tabloids for money and attention. One of the most notable incidences was when he told The Sun that Lindsay overdosed on cocaine when she was just 18, he said:

"Lindsay was filming in New Orleans and I got a call saying she had overdosed on cocaine. One of her assistants had given her the drug. I was so angry I got a gun from the house and planned to go to New Orleans to kill him. I couldn’t believe what had happened to my daughter. I was just so angry."

Understandably, Lohan was furious, especially as she had recently taken part in her own interview where she said she first tried the drug when she was 21.

Lohan and Michael still have contact with each other, but their increasingly fraught relationship doesn't look like it has a bright future.
