The Walt Disney Company is close to sealing the deal on an exciting new project entitled Saving Mr. Banks, about the fraught relationship between Walt Disney and Australian author P.L. Travers. Disney spent 14 years trying to persuade Travers to sell him the film rights to Mary Poppins and she was reportedly dissatisfied with the end result, subsequently refusing to sell him the rights to any of her other works.
It makes sense for Disney to acquire the rights to Saving Mr. Banks, as they made the original Mary Poppins movie and Walt Disney is a major character in this new movie. When the deal is finalized, we'll also find out if there's any truth to the tantalizing casting rumors linking Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep to the project as Disney and Travers, respectively. Sounds like an unbeatable duo and a fascinating film in the making, but here's hoping they don't crush our childhood memories in the process.
