The fans of Sherlock, the BBC series also starring Martin Freeman and responsible for some of the most steamy fan fiction on the internet, are already more than aware of Benedict Cumberbatch's out-of-this-world acting skills. While he's also been in a boatload of fantastic movies, it's safe to say that even more moviegoers are about to be introduced to his radiant presence thanks to Marvel's upcoming Doctor Strange, for which he nabbed the title role.
Doctor Strange, set to be released on November 4, tells the tale of a former surgeon whose accident leads him to reconsider his life choices — and ultimately puts him under the protection and training of the Ancient One, a sorcerer who will introduce him to the mystical arts so that he can protect Earth from an evil force.
With the lead role in the movie about to introduce magic to the MCU, plus a new season of Sherlock currently in filming, you'd think that Cumberbatch has enough on his plate at least for the next year. But apart from Flying Horse, which has been stuck in financing limbo since 2013, the British actor has three projects already lined up.
If you fall in love with him after Doctor Strange, these are the films you'll need to look out for!
1. Magik, December 25, 2016
There's little chance you've heard of Magik — a tiny animated fantasy movie which, for now, is only set for a Canadian release. It's written, directed and produced by Stephen Wallis, whose previous project was the screenplay for the horror movie The Wicked Within. Starring alongside Matthew Goode, Samantha Morton and Tom Riley, Cumberbatch will voice the main character Lewis Clark, an author who discovers a world of magic in which he needs to defeat an evil force to save both the magical and the real parts of his life.
2. Jungle Book, October 19, 2018
Jon Favreau recently released The Jungle Book, a star-studded live action remake of the Disney classic that had the expected success at the box office. But Andy Serkis was also working on his own spin on the jungle tale, initially titled Jungle Book: Origins. To avoid confusion, as this version will not be based on Disney's animated movie, but on Rudyard Kipling's original stories, Warner pushed the release back from 2017 to 2018.
Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring as Shere Khan, for which he will not only provide the voice but also the incredible range of his facial expressions, as this movie will heavily rely on motion capture.
3. How The Grinch Stole Christmas, November 9, 2018
Another voice actor role, Benedict Cumberbatch's part in the new How The Grinch Stole Christmas will be as the Grinch himself. The movie will be produced by Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind Despicable Me, and whose Chris Meledandri stated how delighted he was with Cumberbatch's casting.
"We were determined to make a choice that would not only define this version of The Grinch as absolutely singular, but most importantly, we were looking for a voice to express comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability. It is that vulnerability that allows us to create a character that is not only highly entertaining, but also has an irresistible appeal."
I can't help but admit that the role really suits him!
