Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 6 of Game of Thrones. If you're not up to date then turn back now, for this post is dark and full of spoilers.

Forget Batman v Superman or Captain America: Civil War — the battle of the year is about to commence over on HBO's Game of Thrones in the penultimate episode of the season. Jon Snow is set to take on Ramsay Bolton in a battle of the bastards, arguably the most highly anticipated moment of the current season!

Take a look below:

Intense, right? Well, nothing less should be expected from this heated rivalry that has been brewing for several seasons. Let's take a look back at four important storylines that led to this epic showdown.

Ramsay Torturing Theon Greyjoy

In arguably the most obscene storyline that the hit series has covered thus far, Ramsay tortured former Stark ally Theon Greyjoy. Let's be honest, Theon isn't a particularly nice person and he did turn his back on the Starks in previous seasons. However, the hellacious torture methods that Ramsay inflicted upon him were completely unwarranted and ultimately introduced the world of Game of Thrones to the greatest psychopath since Joffrey Baratheon.

Ramsay not only physically mutilated Theon, but he emotionally broke him — a storyline that continued for many seasons. Even now, Theon remains a different person. This plot set the wheels in motion for all that was to come.

Ramsay Abusing Sansa Stark

Ramsay played Sansa like a fiddle, appearing to be a gentleman up until their wedding. However, it was on their wedding night when he showed his true colors — violating her while forcing Theon to watch.

It was horrifying for us, having to witness a character that we'd grown to love endure this abuse. Afterward, Ramsay kept Sansa locked in the tower. He mentally abused her and only kept her alive so that she could deliver him an heir. Sansa's abuse and imprisonment at the hands of Ramsay was the wakeup call Theon needed; he also realized that this could be his chance for redemption after his actions at Winterfell several seasons earlier.

With the impending battle, Ramsay's defeat at the hands of Jon Snow would be the perfect culmination for this storyline and, more importantly, it would be the perfect revenge for Sansa.

Ramsay Has Rickon Stark

In what was a rather shocking moment, Rickon was forcibly delivered to Ramsay. With the youngest Stark now being held captive, he is at the mercy of the most psychopathic man in all of Westeros.

In fighting Ramsay, Jon and Sansa are hoping to rescue their youngest brother before Ramsay skins him alive.

Reclaiming Winterfell

Any fan of the show knows that Winterfell belongs to the Starks. Unfortunately, it has not been Stark property for several seasons now and is currently ruled by dangerous Ramsay Bolton.

As Sansa said several episodes ago, Winterfell is her and Jon's ancestral home and among all of the other reasons above, they are fighting to reclaim ownership of their homeland. Winterfell belongs to the Starks and Jon intends to take it back.

It's going to be a battle of epic proportions — the fight for Winterfell is on and one bastard will fall. But who is it going to be?
