After much speculation, we finally have our new Superman for the small screen — and no it’s not Smallville’s Tom Welling, it’s Teen Wolf’s Tyler Hoechlin, who is set to light up our screens as the Man of Steel in the second series of Supergirl.

If you’ve been watching the show, you’ll know Superman appeared throughout the first season of the CBS show, though only through silhouettes and the odd mention. But now Supes is set to appear in full form for a confirmed two episodes.

Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg said of the casting of Hoechlin:

“Greg (Berlanti) and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character”.

Hoechlin might be known by some DC fans as being a rumoured choice to play Batman before Ben Affleck was cast. It’ll be interesting to see where he and the CW take this version of Superman, who is already an established hero in the universe. Zack Snyder found himself coming under attack for his darker, brooding take on the comic icon. Only time will tell how this Superman fares.

Without jumping too far ahead of myself, you’d imagine if successful, Tyler could see himself starring in his very own Superman spinoff show. Of course Henry Cavill plays Superman on the big screen, but a Superman show set in the same world as Supergirl and The Flash is too mouth-watering to pass up on.

Looking at the bigger picture, now that Supergirl has officially moved to the CW, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that we could see Superman appear in The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, so here’s hoping.
