More news has been released about the next Friday The 13th movie. The producer has cleared up rumors about the reboot being an origin film, which should come as a relief to some of you fans out there. He also gave a few extra details regarding the story, timeline, and even potential release dates!
Producer Brad Fuller revealed to iHorror the following details about the upcoming Friday the 13th movie. Read below:
"'Origin' isn’t really the right word for this movie. The word 'origin' got out and everyone’s calling it an origin film now, but that isn’t exactly the direction we’re taking. We went down the origin route with the second 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' film, and I think when you go to deep into a character’s origin, the character stops being scary at some point. I’m not worried about demystifying Jason by revealing parts of his back story, which most of the fans are familiar with."
I actually didn't have a problem with them explaining Jason's origin. Unlike characters like Michael Myers who are scarier when their back stories are unknown, Jason already has a background (and he's never really been scary). So, it wouldn't do any harm to explain his origin; I actually thought it'd be interesting!
"It’s more of an alternate world that we’re creating for Jason — an alternate space, alternate reality."
I'm perfectly fine with this. I did enjoy the 2009 reboot, but I don't have a problem with them rebooting the franchise the right way.
This Story Will Take Place In The '70s/'80s
"Yes, Pamela and Jason are together in this film, but this is the same Jason we all know and love. He’s Jason; he kills — he kills teenagers. The story takes place between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, says Fuller. There is a summer camp, and there are camp counselors."
This is basically him saying that fans shouldn't really be worried about whether or not this will be the Friday The 13th movie we all want. It still has the same elements as the other classics, but with a few more things thrown into it.
Is Jason's Father Going To Be Included?
"No, we haven’t decided whether or not Elias will appear in the film. Again, that was a comment I made, which was a response to a question about whether or not Elias would be a part of this film. I said that including Jason’s father was an idea, a possibility, but it’s not at all a certainty that he’ll appear in the film. The main relationship is between Pamela and Jason."
If they were actually going with the origin idea, I'd prefer his father be included. Now that we know this will not be about Jason's origin though, I don't have any preferences.
This Film Is Being Fast Tracked As We Speak
"We’re moving fast. All of our energies are now focused on this new 'Friday the 13th,' and we’re laser-focused. First, we had to release the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movie, and we’ve just been finishing up the next 'Ouija' film. Now it’s all about 'Friday the 13th.'"
Just like the next Halloween movie, Friday The 13th is well on its way back to theaters — and I can't wait!
But It's Release Date Could Be Farther Away Now
"That decision will be made by Paramount Pictures, and I’m sure they will announce a release date soon — whether it’s the next Friday the thirteenth date in October 2017, or another date altogether. Things are moving very fast, and we all know that these films can be filmed and then released very quickly. We’re now looking for a director and hope to start filming soon."
Well, I was hoping to see this thing out in January, but I'm more excited about the fact that it could come out in October of 2017 — the same month of release as the next Halloween flick.
Do I sense some possible competition?
