With the recent release of Independence Day Resurgence, I have end-of-the-world on my mind. While I highly doubt the world will come at the hands of little green men invading our planet, I do think the end of life as we know it is very possible. So I have made a list of ways the world will most likely end, using some awesome movies as reference.
5. Nuclear Warfare - The Book of Eli
While the film itself has very little to do with the end of the world and more with the post-apocalyptic civilizations left behind, the film does suggest the world ends due to nuclear warfare. While I doubt there will be a nuclear war or that nuclear weapons will be used if there is another world war (as it is only disadvantageous for all parties), it is not impossible. If these weapons are used they will surely mean the end of the world as we know it.
4. We run out of resources - Mad Max
If we don’t use our weapons for war it will be to get the last bit of resources. Mad Max’s apocalyptic dessert landscape is based on the idea that people will resort to warfare, killing each other for the last of the oil. Why people can’t use electric cars or go back to riding horses or walk like before, I don’t understand. But it is very likely that running out of oil will result in big fights, especially if we look how even in modern day people fight for rare, valuable resources.
3. Global warming - Waterworld, 2012, Snowpiercer and The Day After Tomorrow
While all four movies are very much the same, they all consider the end of the world will be caused by global warming or some natural disaster. Some like Waterworld and 2012 think this will be caused by water, while others like Snowpiercer and The Day After Tomorrow suggests the world will freeze over. Either way, the world will end. This is very likely considering our current global warming crisis which scientists keep warning us against and we keep ignoring.
2. Earth becomes a dump - Wall-E
While probably meant as a joke, it isn’t unlikely that there will just be too much trash on earth one day forcing us to leave. While global warming is a slow process, plastic and metal decompose at an even slower rate will mankind only continues to populate the earth with all cities continuing to grow.
1. Virus - Contagion
While there are too many zombie movies to count that make mention of a virus killing off mankind, I think it will be more like we see in the film Contagion with a virus spreading faster than we can find a cure. There are numerous examples of diseases that we have no cure for that kills people at a ridiculous rate. Ebola was only one of the latest scares, not to mention HIV/Aids for which there is still no cure, although people can now control the disease with the right treatment and extend their lifespan. It is very possible that a virus will do a species jump and we will find ourselves in a apocalyptic world due to a virus.
