One of the biggest internet sensations this year, beyond the laughing Chewbacca Mom, has been the revelation that actor J.K. Simmons has gotten absolutely ripped.

The Academy Award-winning actor is best known for his work in Whiplash and in the original Spider-Man movie franchise as J. Jonah Jameson. However, Warner Bros. caught fanboys off-guard when it was announced that Simmons would be joining the Justice League and future Batman movies as Commissioner James Gordon. While the casting is completely sensible, many considered the actor off-limits due to his previous superhero experience with rival Marvel Studios. However, unknown to most of the world, Simmons had been secretly training for a return.

The internet erupted when Simmons' trainer posted pictures of the 61-year-old actor working out this past April. While Simmons has long been considered one of the coolest people working in Hollywood, no one anticipated that he was jacked, too. We knew he had the intensity from his previous work:

But really, who knew he was that ripped? No one. Immediately, speculation turned to Simmons working out for his role in Justice League. Well, after a few months the actor set the record straight during a recent interview with Business Insider.

"This is all coincidental. After the second and final time that I got hugely fat in my life and when I lost that weight six or seven years ago, I pretty much decided that I was going to stay in decent shape for the rest of my life."

The actor then went on to elaborate on why he was motivated to transform his body during his golden years.

"I was not in good shape at all. I was overweight and soft and here I am playing the head of the Aryan Brotherhood in this maximum-security prison in the first-ever HBO original drama and I was watching the first season when it came out and I just thought, 'Wow, I don't believe this guy at all. I have to get my a-- to the gym and be a believable hard-a--.'"

Despite rampant speculation and fan theories that director Zack Snyder commanded the actor to get buff, Simmons had been keeping his Clark Kent-like secret for years. Many may have forgotten that the actor first burst onto the scene in Oz before becoming a certified movie star. Taking a look at his transformation from what he was then to now is impressive.

What is most notable about this silly internet story is that Simmons is training for his health and the long haul. His role will be a crucial piece of the DC extended universe and while we certainly shouldn't expect to see any Commissioner Gordon pin-up calendars or workout videos, it should be fun to watch it all play out.
