Have you ever noticed any similarities between Darth Vader and The Mountain, two characters of the most prestigious and fan-beloved sagas of all time? Yes, we compiled a list of reasons why these two characters are so linked, but before that check out Darth Blender's really amusing mash-up video mixing Star Wars and Game of Thrones universes. Play the link below but be careful with spoilers! If you haven't watched the sixth season yet the mashup video is revealing. However if you're an orfan until next year, go for it!
This is not the first reference linking both universes. Some artists on the internet have already posted their work on images relating to them, as you can see next.
But why are they so similar? Follow the reasons to discover!
1. Psychological Constitution
Darth Vader is perhaps the biggest movie villain in cinema history, so that's not a small thing. That leads us to a French study published by the "live-science" webpage:
"The tragic hero of the "Star Wars" prequels displays patterns of instability and impulsivity in the second and third films that make him an obvious candidate for borderline personality disorder (BPD), according to French psychiatrists and psychologists. Skywalker hit six out of the nine borderline personality disorder criteria as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders".
Gregor Clegane isn't exactly a nice guy either. According to his biography at wikipedia:
"He is the head of House Clegane, a knightly house from the Westerlands, and the elder brother of Sandor Clegane. When Sandor and Gregor were children Gregor held his brother's face in a fire for using his toys without permission, horrifically scarring him. He is feared throughout Westeros with a reputation for ferocity and anger".
2. Moral Fights
In the novelization of Return of The Jedi, in 1983, the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi told Luke Skywalker:
"We fought... your father fell into a molten pit. When your father clawed his way out of that fiery pool, the change had been burned into him forever — he was Darth Vader, without a trace of Anakin Skywalker. Irredeemably dark. Scarred. Kept alive only by machinery and his own black will..."
In Game of Thrones, the fight was between Sor Gregor and Oberyn Martell. At some point of it, Oberyn proceeds by jumping and thrusting his spear into Gregor's chest, severely injuring the gigantic man and seemingly sealing his defeat. Gregor survived defeating Oberyn, but his wounds were serious.
3. The Transformation
After the battle injuries, a deep transformation took place of both characters. According to George Lucas in Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays, Vader is a "three-quarter mechanical man and one-quarter human". One the other hand, Sor Gregor (terrible injured), was treated by Qyburn, an expelled former master with extensive medical knowledge gained from "repugnant" and "unnatural" experimentation on living people. So we have our two characters back and transformed!
4. The Outfits
Both of them wear characteristic armors to protect their bodies from external attacks, so this make them even harder to defeat. Gregor's armor is so heavy that no ordinary man would be able to move, let alone fight effectively while wearing it, making him nigh-invincible in combat. And the Vader's black outfit is just classical, isn't it?
5. The Size
Maybe basketball players would be able to talk head to head with our villains. Gregor is freakishly huge, said to be the largest man in Westeros, almost eight feet in height and heavily muscled. For this reason he is called "The Mountain". Darth Vader is more than 6 feet tall and some websites register more than 100 Kg in weight!
6. The Leaders
They are strong and powerful, but both report to someone. Sor Gregor serves as the royal guard of Cersei, and Darth Vader reports to the Emperor.
7. The Pseudonym
Generally our villains do not use their real names. On contrary, their alias are mythical and powerful. Anakin Skywalker is the birth name of Vader, and 'The Mountain' is actually Gregor Clegane.
8. The Fighting Skills
Darth Vader is known to be the biggest Jedi ever existed. The most expert saber fighter of all galaxy. Even at young age no one could beat him in a fight with the light saber. Gregor is known for his violence and cruelty. He is a sadistic murderer and has excellent warrior instincts.
