Today actor Sid Haig turns 77 years old! The Armenian-American got his start in Hollywood way back in the early 1960s, and since that has racked up over 143 credits over six decades! Though he has starred in films including Jackie Brown, Kill Vill Vol. 2 and Mission: Impossible, it's his role as Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses that will be most memorable to horror fans:

The creepy, vulgar clown with teeth that'd make a dentist weep, Captain Spaulding was introduced in House of 1000 Corpses as the owner of a gas station which also doubled as a museum of "monsters and mad men." 13 years later he remains a fan favorite, and in order to celebrate Sid Haig's birthday, check out these quick Captain Spaulding facts:

1. His name comes from a Groucho Marx character

It turns out that many of the villain names in House of 1000 Corpses come from characters comedian Groucho Marx played over the course of his career!

Captain Spaulding's name is from the character Captain Jeffrey Spaulding who Marx played in the film Animal Crackers. Meanwhile Otis comes from Otis B. Driftwood in A Night at the Opera, Rufus from Rufus T. Firefly in Duck Soup, and Grampa Hugo from Hugo Z. Hackenbush in A Day at the Races.

2. The character has featured in three films

While the character was first introduced in House of 1000 Corpses, Captain Spaulding also appears in The Devil's Rejects where he has a much larger role, and his connection to the Firefly family is revealed. He most recently appeared in the 2009 animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, which was based on Rob Zombie's comic book of the same name.

3. His tattoos are a reference to a character from Night of the Hunter

Captain Spaulding has "LOVE" and "HATE" tattoed across his knuckles which is a nod to the character Reverend Harry Powell from Night of the Hunter, who has similar tats.

4. Rob Zombie thinks he's "lovable"

On the director commentary for House of 1000 Corpses, director Rob Zombie described Captain Spaulding as a "lovable asshole." Aw, kind of makes him sound like a rogue-ish uncle, doesn't it? A creepy, murderous rogue-ish uncle...

5. The role revived Haig's career

Captain Spaulding was Haig's first role since starring in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown in 1997 and revived his career, which has stalled during the 90s after he retired for five years due to feeling typecast in films. For his part in House of 1000 Corpses, Haig earned a Best Supporting Actor award at the 13th Annual Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and was inducted into the Horror Hall of Fame. Then, after his larger role in The Devil's Rejects he won Best Actor at the 15th Annual Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, as well Most Vile Villain at the first Annual Spike TV Scream Awards.

Is Captain Spaulding one of your favorite Sid Haig characters?
