Director Nikolaj Arcel's film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower is currently in production, and while unofficial set photos have provided a glimpse at the production we finally have our first official look at the movie's stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

Entertainment Weekly revealed the first official images of Elba as hero Roland Deschain and McConaughey as the sinister Man in Black. The pair appear in costume on the cover of the magazine's upcoming Comic-Con preview issue, at long last giving fans a proper taste of what to expect from the film.

The Dark Tower will take inspiration from King's book series of the same name, though it's expected to diverge a bit from the eight book series. The books follow hero Roland Deschain, also known as the Gunslinger, as he attempts to find the fabled Dark Tower — the nexus point of all reality in his fantasy-inspired home of Mid-World. However, his quest is repeatedly challenged by the Man in Black, a powerful sorcerer who's taken various forms throughout time.

In addition to the cover, EW's provided individual images of each actor in character. Elba perfectly embodies adventurous gunslinger Roland Deschain, rocking a leather jacket and vest that blends elements of traditional western style with military gear. And of course, he's ready for action with his signature revolvers in hand. The only thing missing is Roland's trademark cowboy hat, though truth be told we're totally cool with this look.

Meanwhile, McConaughey appears menacing as the Man in Black, waltzing through the Dixie Pig, a meeting place frequented by monstrous characters in the series. And the Man in Black clearly has some clout with its patrons, with them all bowing their heads in respect to the magician. Even more exciting is the symbol for the Crimson King above McConaughey's head. The Crimson King is the ultimate embodiment of evil in the Dark Tower universe, and the Man in Black works as one of his emissaries. If his symbol's popping up now, there's a decent chance we'll see him appear in the film.

We still don't know much about The Dark Tower, but these photos should definitely inspire hope in the hearts of fans. The casting of Elba and McConaughey has been almost universally praised, and these images have us even more excited to see them in action.

The Dark Tower rides into theaters on February 17, 2017. What do you think of the first official images? Let us know in the comments below.
