A brand new internet rumor has surfaced, courtesy of longtime running Batman fan site Batman on Film, which claims to know the setting of the upcoming Batman solo film, set to be directed by Ben Affleck, who will also star.

Of course, the obvious setting is Gotham City, but it sounds as though the film may have a more contained setting within that famous city — Arkham Asylum. Yep, that's right, the hospital/prison for the criminally insane, a building that is home to many of Batman's greatest foes.

We heard recently in a report that the film will include many of Batman's villains, not all in large roles, but a familiar few from the most famous rogues gallery in comic books. Obviously, Arkham Asylum would be the perfect setting for many villains to appear, as a number of them are usually in the facility at the same time. Perhaps one of the best examples of an Arkham Asylum-set story within the past few years was the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum, which saw Batman trapped on Arkham island for one night while many of his villains roamed free around the asylum.

I love the idea of sticking Batman within a contained area, if the filmmakers took some inspiration from The Raid or Dredd, we could be in for something quite spectacular. Batman isn't a hero that necessitates a grandiose, spectacle film about the end of the world. Batman is a character that is most interesting in smaller stories, which is why Arkham would be the perfect setting. Make the story personal, focus in on Batman and deliver a close quarters, visceral and dark action film. Arkham is also a great idea because it's the type of setting which allows for a large cast of characters without feeling overstuffed and convoluted.

We're going to get our first look at Arkham Asylum on August 5th in the highly anticipated Suicide Squad starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. Watch the final trailer before the film's release below:

Remember, this is still a rumor and the solo Batman film has yet to be given a release date.
